Product Description

Product Description

New shape subwoofers with Yamaha's latest technologies, including Advanced YST II, Linear Port and down-firing design plus best matching for front surround systems and micro component systems. Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance.

From the Manufacturer

The Yamaha YST-FSW050 Subwoofer: New Slim Design for Compact Home Theater Systems

This new shaped subwoofer features Yamaha's latest technologies, including Advanced YST II, Linear Port and down-firing Active design, and produces clean, distortion-free bass to add satisfying weight to your movies and music. The YST-FSW050 is an ideal match for surround-sound sound bar systems (like Yamaha's Digital Sound Projector Series) and micro component systems--any place you need a big punch from a smaller package.

Advanced YST II and Down-Firing Active Subwoofer

Advanced YST II produces rich bass sound, and the Linear Port
reduces cabinet noise for clarity even at high volumes
Rack-Mountable Design Matches Speakerbar Systems and Micro Component Systems
The typical subwoofer box is not a good aesthetic match for a slim front surround system such as a Yamaha Digital Sound Projector. So Yamaha created a new design for the YST-FSW050. Much slimmer than normal subwoofers, it will fit neatly in a rack below the surround system like Yamaha's Digital Sound Projector series, and matches well with micro component systems such as Yamaha's PianoCraft series. Of course, the compact, rack mountable design saves space as well.

Down-Firing Active Design
This subwoofer employs a high performance, down-firing active design. Even though compact, it delivers impressive bass power and accurate sound reproduction. The down-firing design radiates the sound efficiently in all directions.

Linear Port
The Linear Port provides smooth bass response and minimizes extraneous cabinet noise to eliminate the "box buzz" common to smaller subwoofers. It also serves to boost the sound output from this compact subwoofer, so you can fill any room with tight, punchy bass.

Dynamic Power
Capable of handling high dynamic power, the YST-FSW050 subwoofer ensures that you hear all bass sounds, even the loudest short bursts, with fast attack and total clarity.

Advanced YST II can dynamically adjust to your amplifier signal
to create smooth bass with fast attack
Advanced YST II Brings You Super Bass
The effectiveness of Advanced YST II (Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) is based upon two principles: the Helmholtz Resonator and negative-impedance drive.

How does it work? Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) uses an Active Servo Processing amplifier circuit to achieve zero impedance so the speaker unit has a more linear motion, resulting in tighter bass reproduction and minimizing distortion because everything in the subwoofer moves together smoothly.

In Advanced YST II, an Advanced Negative Impedance Converter enables the speaker cone to be driven with even tighter control--it can dynamically adjust in order to select the optimum values for speaker impedance variation. The result is more stable and accurate low range response, as well as higher sound pressure levels, for more natural and energetic bass reproduction.

Matched currently with a new Yamaha 444 center & 555 tower 3.1 system. I've used impressive 8" & 12" passive/active subs by B&W & Velodyne over the past 20 years. I purchased this Yamaha because my wife didn't want an "ugly box" on the floor with a previous "hide the cables & boxes" basement in-wall 5.1 system. This sub actually fits and works well on the TV stand lowest shelf.

My verdict: Simply amazing for the size & price. Very tunable and attenuation controls very effective. It works/balances great with the new all-Yamaha speaker system purchased when we moved. Highly recommend Dependable Resources, too. Honestly, you will be surprised by the range, output & accuracy of this concise unit. I do not agree that it is boomy at all; it is so easy to balance this sub. I can say this because it's been used in a a variety of rooms and systems, and it always adjusts to an appropriate output. It's not chest pounding like a top 10 or 12, but quite ample for most situations.

I bought this to enhance the sound of my ceiling speakers. I wanted something small that would fit under a table or love seat so my choices were limited. It's just OK. It cranks out a lot of high, boomy bass but doesn't sound very natural. I have it hooked up to the subwoofer output of a Yamaha CRX-330BL CD Receiver. Unfortunately, neither the receiver nor the sub have a crossover setting. I think that would make all the difference in the world. On certain songs that have low bass notes, the sub seems to reproduce those notes pretty well. The problem is it has a peak at around the 100-200Hz range that makes everything sound boomy.

Another complaint is the sub does not seem to turn off when no audio is fed to it. There is a control cord that came with it but no where to plug it into the receiver. Every other sub I own turns on when a signal is applied and turns off after a few minutes if no signal is detected. This is a poor design.

I plan to open the box to see if there is anything I can do to improve the sound. Perhaps some acoustic foam or fiberfill in the cabinet may reduce the boominess, if it doesn't already have some. If that doesn't work, I'll try some modifications to the circuit to see if I can lower the crossover frequency. I'll report back with my results.

If size is not an issue, there are much better subs out there for just a bit more money. They Sony SA-W3000 is far superior to this sub and only costs $30 more. If your budget (and floor space) is bigger, you have many subs to choose from. My favorite is still my 15" Velodyne. I haven't found anything else even comes close. Of course when it comes to subwoofers, size does matter!

Update: I decided it was not worth my time to mess with this because the sound quality was poor. I returned it to Amazon.

Just started to review the product and I wanted to correct some previous reviews that said that it does not have auto-on and off. It does include this feature. There is a mini-jack that connects to the trigger output of your receiver (assuming your receiver has one). I plugged the included cord in and connected the other end to the jack on the back of my Denon receiver--it worked flawlessly. You just keep it in the off-position on the switch and it automatically turns on.

So far it is sounds good, and fits very well into the small rack space required. (It's a very heavy component unit, so I'm not worried about it shaking other components). I'm guessing that if you are looking for a smaller unit like me, you'll find that this product fits the bill.

The good: I enjoy the sound quality of this subwoofer. I use it to listen to classical music as a bookshelf speaker with my Logitech internet radio.
The bad:
1. For the sound it only has an RCA input. Needed an additional adaptor cable to convert the 3.5mm output from the radio.
2. The power on/off is manual. When I set my radio to sleep, the subwoofer stays on all night. The system on/off works only with Yamaha sound device.

I gave this woofer a 5 star rating just because it is what it is: an inexpensive, no frills but solid performer. My living area is average size and with my 'Visio' 3-D sound bar it works great. Other reviewers have called it boomy, and it can be at higher audio levels, but for watching flicks and action t.v. shows it does great at even under 50%.

I haven't used it yet with my i-pod dock but I can see where it may distort the low end sound some, but for the bucks you can't beat this 'Yamaha'. As for it having to be turned off manually, it's not a big deal for me. I mostly use it for flicks like I said before, so it will be off for the news and game shows etc...Even in this age of remote control everything, I can make it off my butt to push a button.

I bought this for use with my YSP-4100 sound projector. I was very happy with my sound projector before, but now with the sub I'm ecstatic. I only began thinking about a sub after reading reviews of what a difference it makes to the sound experience. I chose this sub because of the good reviews and for the form/fit in my rear shelves. This unit exceeds my expectations and I would recommend it highly. I was going to give it 4 stars since there is no auto on/off and because there's no remote to adjust the volume, but I decided not to penalize the product just because I have to get off my lazy boy a time or two.
