Yamaha's Advanced Active Servo Technology is a complementary amplifier/speaker system utilizing negative impedance feedback in the amp and a Helmholtz resonator in the speaker to provide strong and accurate bass from small speakers.
Dual 8-inch Drivers and 200 Watt Amplifier
High amplifier power assures enough power to deliver movie theater-like bass effects and the dual 8-inch spruce cone drivers translates the power into clear bass sound. The YST-SW305 has a frequency range of 20 to 160 Hz.
Front Panel Controls
Front panel controls make it easy to see the settings and make adjustments when necessary.
Versatile Slim-Line Design
The new YST-SW305 is a slim-line design measuring only 9-1/4" wide. The sub can be positioned either vertically or horizontally.
Bass Selector
Yamaha's BASS selector tailors the sub's output for video or music at the touch of a switch.
Magnetic Shielding
The subwoofer is magnetically shielded so it can be placed near a TV monitor or receiver without fear that it will degrade the picture.
Continuously Variable High-Cut Filter
The user adjustable continuously variable high-cut filter sets the highest frequency the subwoofer will deliver. It can be set anywhere from 40 to 140 Hz. For instance, if the filter is set at 75 Hz, only frequencies 75 Hz or below will be delivered by the subwoofer. This allows the sub's output to be matched to the other speakers in the system and the room's acoustics for a seamless presentation.
Volume ControlL
The volume control permits the perfect matching of the sub's output to the overall volume of the system.
Signal Sensing On/Off
For convenience, the YST-SW305 has a signal sensing circuit. When the subwoofer detects an audio signal, it turns its power on. When it senses no signal for several minutes, it shuts itself off. The sub also has a manual override.
Phase Normal/Reverse Switch
Makes it easy to phase the subwoofer with the other speakers in your system.
Dual Inputs
Two sets of inputs allow the versatile subwoofer to accept either line level or speaker level input signals.
Heavy-Duty Speaker Terminals
Yamaha's three-way speaker terminals accept banana plug and a variety of other connectors, as well as speaker wire.
Black Finish
Rigid MDF Construction
The YST-SW305's cabinet is constructed of HQ-MDF to increase rigidity and reduce vibration and resonance.

This review is from: Yamaha YST-SW305 Dual 8 Powered Subwoofer (Single) (Electronics)
I purchased a YST-SW305 about three days ago. I needed a quick replacement for my current theater as I gave my friend the Klipsch KSW 12 I was uitilizing at the time. I knew from the start that I was not going to get the same level of perfomace from the Yamaha that I was accustomed to with my Klipsch. The design differences are clear indicators that placement for the Yamaha will be critical. I prefer a bottom loaded sub with a rear port. This enables the frequencies from the sub to reflect off of a wall and have time to travel to the listener. Thus, the result is a deep, full low end sound. The Yamaha design is a front loaded sub with front facing ports. If I face it in the corner with the spaekers and ports to the wall, I have wires and an ugly rear pannel looking back at me. Sounds decent, but looks like hell. If I place the sub towards me to clean up the presentation, I loose about half of the potential from the unit. This is the immediate turn off. Sound is not that bad when located properly. Careful when pushing the 305 to it's peak levels. One will encounter serious cone ripping distortion when you drive this unit too hard. At medium levels of volume, it will produce very clean and accurate bass for even the pickiest of enthusiasts. My reccomendation is to load your room with two of these units. The bottom line is value. I purchased mine for [ cheap] ... At that price, I found it hard to pass up buying a second one for a fuller effect. I will probably keep these units for about 6 months and make my move back to Klipsch. I give this unit three stars only because of it's design. The bang for the buck is great.

Dolby 5.1,

This subwoofer clearly demonstrates the .1 in Dolby 5.1. Thought I was getting good bass with my Bose system (4 speakers). When I added this unit I found out what was missing. Excellent bass response. Movies and music sound the way they should.

A bang for your $,

Well the price was great,a slim line box thats easy to hide. I thought that two 8 inch speakers would be better than buying a huge 12 or 15 inch speaker that takes up a lot of space. I was wrong. Even though you have two speakers they are just too small for accurate bass responce at a high volume. thats why it is great for movies just not for music. Over all it is a decant product for what your paying for.
