5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sub, but check the price
This is a fantastic sub. It has very crisp, responsive bass. Most larger speakers are a bit muddy or can't sustain a bass note for long as a low current circuit can't recharge a driving capacitor fast enough. No problems here. You'll love it for music and movies both.

Amazon's got to do some work on the price, however. Their current "list" of $399 is $50 higher...

3.0 out of 5 stars Have Realistic Expectations
After reading glowing reviews for this and other subwoofers, I had high hopes that adding one to my stereo system would transform my listening experience, filling out the sound from my main speakers and giving my music a more immersive feel. I have to say I'm mildly disappointed. Output from this subwoofer at settings recommended to complement my main speakers (with 8"...

Amazon's got to do some work on the price, however. Their current "list" of $399 is $50 higher than the real Yamaha list price. I normally buy everything I can from Amazon because I like the reliability and consolidated shipping. The current $349 price is 40% higher than other merchants. If you go price shopping yourself, be sure you're checking prices with the piano black finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome product, February 22, 2008
This review is from: Yamaha YST-SW315PN 10" Powered Subwoofer (Piano Black) (Electronics)
Bought one of these speakers as a test and was pleasantly surprise and bought a second one to complete my theater romm.

Imagine a Panasonic PT-AE1000u projector throwing image on 120 inch screen and surround that include two of these Yahama babies...going to the cinema is joke!!!! since the addition of these subs the listening experience is just out of this world.

Connections i Find were rather simple with little or no need for the manual. And who cares about the standby switch not responding to power. How hard is it reach behind and turn off the power switch???

For great sound and good looks (I call them sexy) You cant beat the price!!! I would say to anyone, buy this sub. YOU WONT REGRET IT!!

After reading glowing reviews for this and other subwoofers, I had high hopes that adding one to my stereo system would transform my listening experience, filling out the sound from my main speakers and giving my music a more immersive feel. I have to say I'm mildly disappointed. Output from this subwoofer at settings recommended to complement my main speakers (with 8" woofers) is barely audible at low and moderate volumes, only ramping up when my receiver's volume is cranked to high levels. At ordinary listening volumes, where one doesn't have to shout to carry on a conversation, it just doesn't contribute much to what my main speakers produce. I'm keeping this sub for those rare times when I have the house to myself and want to blast my music, but I'm not getting much day-to-day value from it (in a household where we listen to music almost constantly).

I believe this subwoofer is working as it should, and may well sound better than others. I just expected more than was realistic, and don't live in an area where I can do any comparison shopping for this type of component.

In this subwoofer's favor, I will say having the controls on the front of the unit is very helpful, as is being able to change the settings. It was the principal reason I chose the Yamaha brand. Set-up is very easy and the manual is quite clear, contrary to what I've read in other reviews. In terms of appearance, this is sculpturally a really striking subwoofer. Keep in mind the "piano" finish is not as soft as it appears in the stock photos. It's closer to a mirror-black finish. There are several non-Amazon vendors offering this subwoofer online at lower prices, but the customer-satisfaction reviews are alarming for these companies.

I have to admit, at first I thought this thing was overrated. I hooked it up and turned it about a quarter up, and, while it was ok, it was certainaly nothing to write home about. Of course, I forgot these things take a little time to adjust. I kept it on low settings until about a week later when I popped in a movie and thought I would try some higer levels. The darn thing almost blew my widows out. Suffice to say this is a very powerful little sub-woofer, and more than enough for those like me that live in a small apartment. The sound is rich and accurate, and pulls off the challenging feat of not completely smothering my other speakers very well. I'm very pleased with this product.

As a side note, I had originally hooked it up through my receiver's subwoofer pre-out, which the manual discourages unless you have 2 of them (very rare on low-mid level recievers). After routing my speakers through the sub like the manual suggested, I got a bit better sound. Also, if you want shiny laquer-black, be sure to get the piano finish.

I rated the yamaha sub four and half stars.!!! The only reason I did not give it five, getting it set up . But with a little time and reading instructions it worked out fine.I have the Yamaha rxv2700 net. recever. With this sub it`s a match made in heven. the piano black box is a beautiful peace of work,it blends in well with rest of the furniture in the room. Most importantly the sound of the sub can be earth shakeing.and smooth as a baby`s bottom. This sub sounds alot bigger than it realy is.IN ALL I LOVE IT!!! I would tell anyone with high powered amp. try it you might love it too.

I have been using this subwoofer and found that it performs well. I think it could use a larger speaker 12" instead of 10". However, for the price its good. Not best in class

I would still buy it again.
