Editorial Reviews

Japan's newfound love for nationalistic military thrillers continues on apace with this moving true story of the crew of doomed warship, the Yamato. On April 6, 1945, the largest battleship ever constructed, and its crew of nearly 3000 men, was dispatched on a suicide mission to stop allied forces from taking Okinawa. Never reaching her final destination, the Yamato was besieged by close to 400 U.S. aircraft. After sustaining 8 bomb and 10 torpedo hits, this huge warship capsized and sank some 200km from Okinawa. She remains there to this day. Directed by veteran filmmaker Sato Junya (The Bullet Train, Golgo 13), Otokotachi no Yamato tells the story of all involved in that fateful mission - those who survived, those who waited patiently at home for word from their loved ones, and the thousands of men who died aboard the mighty vessel. Featuring a fine ensemble cast, led by Shido Nakamura, star of Neighbor #13 and Fearless, and a majestic score from renowned composer Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away), the film is a thrilling retelling of one of the pivotal moments of Japan's WWII campaign

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent storytelling about the final days of the Yamato, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Yamato Japan Movie DVD (DVD)
Similar to the technique used in the movie "Titanic", this movie presents a historical account of the final days of the WWII Japanese battleship "Yamato" by weaving history around drama in the lives of her crew. The film's dialogue is in Japanese with English subtitles. The subtitles are rather rough around the edges; however, enough gets across for you to follow what's going on. Unlike the storytelling in "Das Boot," this movie sort of "sanitizes" the everyday lives of the ship's crew. Additionally, a couple of cultural idiosyncrasies lost me. Overall, it's an engaging film that history buffs will especially enjoy. Battle scenes are well done and get very gory -- I wouldn't recommend viewing by young kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Movie, January 6, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Yamato Japan Movie DVD (DVD)
This movie is so well done. I've watched it with my kids many times. It's a very good story, following the lives of a certain number of the Yamato's crew (fictionalized), but consistent with the who the Japanese veterans were. It does honor to fighting men and their families everywhere. Of course, I did remind my kids to remember which side was in the right during the war, but they appreciated the human side of this story. Of course, the recreation of the ship was fantastic - quite an effort. If you are a historian, or naval buff, or modeler, this movie is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars The opposite site of the war, May 23, 2009
This review is from: Yamato Japan Movie DVD (DVD)
Present like a ascendants' recall of a samurai tradition of self-sacrificing for a country, an epic of Japanese ship destroyed by the US Navy is an interesting work depicting the features of a Japanese life not so known by a reviewer from the opposite site of the war.

Less explicitly homoerotic than Das Boot - The Original Uncut Version, it still presents interesting information of ordinary Japanese and military commanders cheating them which was, however, nothing special at then global scale of the WWII.
