4.0 out of 5 stars a compilation of early Tito Puente gems, August 2, 2006
This review is from: Yambeque: The Progressive Side of Tito Puente 2 (Audio CD)
"Yambeque: The Progressive Side of Tito Puente, Vol. 2" is a quality collection of early Big Band music by the man known as 'the King of Latin Music.' The vintage selections are from the climax of Tito Puente's popularity: 1950 to 1960. While dated, the production quality is high, the arrangements are interesting, the song choice is good and the improvisation is accomplished. In particular, this CD features some great drum work. While quality drum solos are threaded throughout, the two rhythmic tracks stand out. 'Mon-Ti' and 'Cuero Pelao' are dazzling rhythmic masterpieces. This is especially true with 'Mon-Ti' which plays in an odd time signature with the strangest breaks. The speed of 'Cuero Pelao' will make any percussionist envious of Puente's true talent and genius. 'Cuban Fantasy' is one of the disc's highlights. I used to listen to a Latin Jazz radio program in New York City that played this as the show's theme song. Moreover, what would a Latin Jazz album be without a Jazz standard? 'Take the A Train' satisfies this requirement. While Tito Puente played great music throughout his half a century career, "Yambeque" showcases selections from his early years.
