Exquisite top-ten kid flick from Mexico moves grownups too., May 28, 2000
This review is from: Yanco [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This atonishing film is one of the greatest ever made for either children or adults. The overwhelmingly beautiful cinematography depicts the adventures of an Indian boy alienated from his milieu due to his profound sensitivity to noise. He eventually meets an itinerant musicians who gives him a violin. As an allegory of the alienation of the beautiful soul from a fallen world, this is high art of the first order. But the story is easy to follow even without the occasional subtitles, and therefore well suited for children.
Perhaps because of its sad ending, the producers tacked on a happy epilogue to accompany the credits, complete with festive music and smiling cameo faces of the actors, as if too say, "Don't worry, kids--it's only make-believe." Viewers would do well to stop the tape before the mood is thereby destroyed.
This unforgettable gem is just the antidote for both the Disnified insouciance and South Park cynicism rampant in the kids section of the video store. If you have children; if you know a child; or if you remember being one yourself, get this classic film before it goes out of print.
