5.0 out of 5 stars Effective, good quality, November 23, 2010

I take Yin Qiao regularly to stave off colds and flus, and I haven't had one stick in a long time. In fact, it was so long, I almost forgot about Gan Mao Ling, had none on hand, and had to order it in a hurry.

I had severe sinus congestion, sore throat, twitching eyelid and I was very worried I was close to needing antibiotics for my right ear - it was showing all the classic signs of infection that I used to get so frequently. I was having to take sudafed every four hours like clockwork. I didn't have time to visit my MD; I needed to pack and move! (Note: this isn't a replacement for a physician, but I'm experienced with my body in this particular situation.) I ordered this overnight, and received it promptly as promised.

I combined Gan Mao Ling with Yin Qiao Pian and chrysanthemum tea, and was able to stop taking sudafed in a day and a half. From my worst to almost over it in three days, after weeks of struggling with this cold/flu! I still have a bit of throat congestion, and continue to take these two formulas to help me recover. I've taken this formula in the past with the same helpful results, and this particular manufacturer seems to be producing the same high quality formula I expect. (It's unregulated, so you never know!)

NOTE: This is not effective for congestion that's settled into the lungs. It strongly clears heat/rising heat/wind-heat, but is formulated for sinus congestion and sore throat. DO NOT TAKE if you are experiencing severe chills. Consider Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan for phlegmy lungs. May be taken simultaneously with Yin Qiao. Do not use during pregnancy.

It's a general all-around 'safe' medication to take short term for almost all types, but avoid long-term use if you aren't consulting with a qualified herbalist. If you have long-term or recurring illnesses, consult with a Chinese medical practitioner for formulas specifically intended for your issues.

THIS IS DEFINITELY MEDICINE, NOT A VITAMIN OR SUPPLEMENT - which is to say, do not over/megadose or take longer than necessary. Take only as directed!

The Gan Mao Ling formula usually contains:
Gang mei gen (rough leaf holly root)
San cha ku (Evodia root & leaf)
Ye ju hua (Chrysanthemum indicum flower)
Huang jing cao (Vitex negundo herb)
Huang jing gen (Vitex negundo root)
Ban lan gen (Isatis indigotica root)
Jin yin hua (honeysuckle flower)

5.0 out of 5 stars It Works!, December 20, 2008
I've tried many things at the onset of a cold. Some work, some don't. This works! My daughter was in the middle of a head and chest cold, not the onset, when I gave her Ganmaoling tablets to take home. It worked for her. In a matter of days it was gone. How? Ask someone more familiar with Traditional Asian medicine.
My Asian market used to carry it for $2.25 a bottle (with no s/h), but it's worth the extra money since they no longer have it.
