What this country has long needed is a good Yankees encyclopedia. Mark Gallagher has done a beautiful job. he begins with a spirited history of the Yankees, a team that (despite a few insignificant recent blips) stands as a peerless standard of excellence. Biographies of the 180 most notable Yankees extract their statistics with the team from those of the rest of their careers, and there is a listing for everyone who ever played for the team along with a chronological section on managers, which unaccountably fails to explain why kid Eberfield (1908) was called "the Tabasco Kid."
