"This book gives you a slightly different spin on Yankees history. You will relive many memorable moments, ones that have become familiar throughout the years, but this book gives you a little more insight into those moments and memories." --from the foreword by Joe Torre
The Yankees began as the New York Highlanders in 1903 and recorded their first win on April 23 of that year. In the 100-plus years since, they have won more world championships than any other sports franchise and sent more players and managers to the Hall of Fame than any other team in baseball. The Yankees have been involved in many of baseball's greatest moments, including Babe Ruth's called shot; Mickey Mantle's tape-measure home run; Don Larsen's perfect game; Roger Maris's 61st home run; the unforgettable playoff memories provided by Bucky Dent, Chris Chambliss, and Aaron Boone; and Reggie Jackson's and Derek Jeter's World Series heroics.
All of these great Yankees players are honored in this book, as are the most memorable moments in the team's rich history. Yankees Essential will take readers on a magical journey from the days of the old Highlanders right on into the 21st century and the team's most recent quest for a 27th championship. Whether you are an old-school fan looking to relive great memories of the past or a more contemporary observer looking to upgrade your Yankees knowledge, this book will satisfy your needs through countless anecdotes and insiders' stories; dozens of photographs; and scores of trivia, lists, and statistics

I was very disappointed with this book. I was expecting it to be really good because it claims to give us a new spin on Yankee history. Unfortunately, there was nothing fresh AT ALL about this book. To make matters worse, it wasn't even interesting. I can usually read anything written about the Yankees because I love them but this was a joke. I actually stopped reading it when I got to page 83 and there was a photo with a clear picture of 4 Yankees: Mel S., Joe T., Joe G., & Tino Martinez and the caption gave the names of the first 3 and then for Tino it said "unidentified player". It is CLEAR that its Tino. I lost all respect for the author at that point. Some Yankee fan! How can you not recognize Tino? Anyway, the book gave NO fresh spin on Yankee history, no new insight, nothing worth your time or money.

With all the countless barrels of ink that have been drained dry by countless authors writing about the New York Yankees over the last 100 years or so, it's hard to imagine someone being able to put together a book about the legendary "Bronx Bombers" that's even remotely fresh and different. But Howie Karpin - a talented sports reporter and an accredited official scorer for both the Yankees and the New York Mets - has done just that, and then some, with his "Yankees Essential".
Karpin touches "all the bases" with his nifty little tome, bringing up new and interesting facts and stories about the most successful and fascinating franchise in the history of professional sports, while at the same time not overlooking the longstanding pillars of New York Yankee lore. Laid-out in grand style with lots of terrific photographs that enhance and amplify the text, Karpin has performed a commendable job with his first book, and I'm sure that everyone who reads it will look forward - as I do - to Howie's next one.
