Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Love 'em or hate 'em, the Yankees have been as much a part of the October World Series landscape as falling leaves. This comprehensive, year-by-year history of baseball's most storied franchise is a treasure trove of breezy writing, nostalgic photography, thorough bibliography, and enough team statistics to overload a disk drive. Yet what puts The Yankees in a league of its own is its magnificent series of essays on some of the most colorful personalities ever to stride onto a ball field by some of the best scribes ever to haunt a press box: Grantland Rice on Babe Ruth, Paul Gallico on Lou Gehrig, Red Smith on Casey Stengel, and that's just the start. It's this kind of packaging that's making Temple University Press's Baseball in America and Baseball Encyclopedia series--the lineup also includes volumes on the Cubs, White Sox, Phillies, Braves, and Indians--real winners.

Review

"Its a grand slam: exceptional words, terrific artwork, complete records, and those wonderful columns by media superstars on Yankee greats. So this is a double two-fer; its a four-fer!" --Donald Honig

4.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Team In Baseball, September 23, 2000
By
This review is from: The Yankees: An Illustrated History (Baseball In America) (Hardcover)
Time has come and passed, with teams handing the World Series trophy over to the next team the next year. There are no true dynasties anymore. Back in the 20's through the mid 60's, the New York Yankees were the team to beat, every year. And now, once again, the New York Yankees are the epitomy of greatness. Names like Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle, Maris, and Jeter have all walked through the hallowed corridors of Yankee Stadium, calling it their home. No team in any sport has recorded as many world championships as the Yankees have. Beginning with the trade involving Babe Ruth in 1920, within three years they had won their first World Series, traveling to the beginning of the new era with Jeter, the Yankees have been spectacular. In this book, the essence of the true, pinstriped summer boys is captured in breathtaking photography. I have yet to find a photography book that makes me feel like I'm there, to take the pictures like this one has. Taking you to Cooperstown and beyond, this book is priceless. It shows the viewer what kind of team it takes to win 25 World Series, what kind of team, year in and year out, is outstanding. The Yanks are a team you love or you love to hate. If you are a sports fan of any kind, this book will surely change the way you view the boys in pinstripes.

3.0 out of 5 stars History of a Yankees' Fan Remembrances, September 16, 2009
This review is from: The Yankees: An Illustrated History (Baseball In America) (Hardcover)
This book has family pictures from albums and yearbooks but most of the photos feature Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team of the '50s. She led a charmed life but dwelled on baseball throughout this memoir in particular the Brooklyn Dodgers.

"As I did with the lives of those around me, I could incorporate the people of fiction, even of history, into my own life, make them real..." A diehard Dodgers fan from childhood, Doris Kearns names her memoir with the team's anthem, "Wait till next year." The book is full of family pictures, using albums and yearbooks to show the individuals being remembered. Most of the photos feature Brooklyn Dodgers baseball memorabilia. In the 40s, the marble rotunda at the entrance to Ebbets Field looked like a train station in a dream.

There was always a fierce rivalry with the Yankees to win the World's Series, as she remembers rooting for her team. She gives an account of meeting one of her favorite Dodgers at a local Episcopal church. "The warmth of his broad smile was all I needed to know that this was a night I would not forget."
