About the Author

Albert Marrin is a professor of history who, in more than twenty juvenile nonfiction books, has attempted to make the past accessible to young readers. In award-winning books such as 1812: The War Nobody Won, Cowboys, Indians, and Gunfighters: The Story of the Cattle Kingdom, and "Unconditional Surrender": U. S. Grant and the Civil War, he has created a tapestry of United States history by focusing on dramatic moments and famous personalities. With biographies of leaders and tyrants from Napoleon to Hitler, Marrin has also interpreted the events of a larger world stage for juvenile readers. Additionally, his several books on the First and Second World Wars provide well-organized introductions to many aspects of those struggles. Chairman of the history department at New York's Yeshiva University, Marrin's books for young readers complement his academic duties and writings. One of his earliest such books, Victory in the Pacific, is indicative of Marrin's thorough, no-nonsense approach to history. Dr. Albert Marrin is a master at weaving personal perspective and historical material smoothly to give readers an interesting and reliable account of the subject. He has written over two dozen award-winning nonfiction books for young people which have been called "addictive reading" by The Horn Book. This is a wonderful clue to the type of author Marrin is. We at BFB respect his work and are so pleased to be publishing several of his titles. Three of his books, including Hitler and Stalin: Russia's Man of Steel, were School Library Journal Best Books of the Year. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Yanks Are Coming": Highly Recommended!, April 3, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Yanks Are Coming: The United States in the First World War (Hardcover)
Albert Marrin's books are all top-notch! "The Yanks Are Coming" is no exception. Marrin begins by explaining how the U.S. became involved in the first world war and how it affected life in America. Did you know that sauerkraut became "liberty cabbage"?(Kind of like "freedom fries" today.)
He includes first hand accounts of battle and life in the trenches. We get to meet Sgt. York and the Red Baron. Mr. Marrin presents "just the facts" about WWI without injecting much of his opinion. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read for WWI - excellent for elementary aged children to adults, November 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Albert Marrin was recommended by homeschooling expert Carole Joy Seid. This was the first of Mr. Marrins' books that we have read, and I have to tell you that this is an outstanding study of WWI.

It was difficult to find anything about WWI for elementary and jr high aged students, much less that wasn't the typical BORING, DRY, DULL text-book type material that puts students in classrooms to sleep. The Yanks Are Coming is exciting, any easy read, and I highly recommend it for ages 8 and up.

Mr. Marrin walks the reader through the events that triggered WWI, carefully explaining the events and people who were key during the way and finally, in defeating the aggressors. This book is well-titled, as the Yanks were the key that changed the course of the war.

I will definately read more of Albert Marrin. Would really like to see his books again in hardcover as these paperbacks aren't made to last. There are reproducible maps which are handy reference. Also included are many photographs which help the reader to personalize the story and picture the individuals in the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to the American contribution in WWI., February 3, 2011
By
Kevin M Quigg (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
I have read one of Marrin's other books, and this is a good introduction to the American committment in WWI. The Yanks were truly the tipping point in this war. Without them, the British, French, and Italians would have lost the war. Their soldiers were brave and their numbers insurmountable. Lundendorff's spring offensives were the last gamble of the Germans, and they lost these through the toughness of the British and French soldiers, but also because of American reserves.

Marrin does a good job of detailing the home front, the war in the sky and sea, and the battlefront victories.

This is an OK read for those interested in finding out about America's contribution in the First World War.
