"The Yanks Are Coming": Highly Recommended!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Yanks Are Coming: The United States in the First World War (Hardcover)
Albert Marrin's books are all top-notch! "The Yanks Are Coming" is no exception. Marrin begins by explaining how the U.S. became involved in the first world war and how it affected life in America. Did you know that sauerkraut became "liberty cabbage"?(Kind of like "freedom fries" today.)He includes first hand accounts of battle and life in the trenches. We get to meet Sgt. York and the Red Baron. Mr. Marrin presents "just the facts" about WWI without injecting much of his opinion. Highly recommended!

This review is from: The Yanks are Coming: The United States in the First World War (Paperback)
Albert Marrin was recommended by homeschooling expert Carole Joy Seid. This was the first of Mr. Marrins' books that we have read, and I have to tell you that this is an outstanding study of WWI.It was difficult to find anything about WWI for elementary and jr high aged students, much less that wasn't the typical BORING, DRY, DULL text-book type material that puts students in classrooms to sleep. The Yanks Are Coming is exciting, any easy read, and I highly recommend it for ages 8 and up. Mr. Marrin walks the reader through the events that triggered WWI, carefully explaining the events and people who were key during the way and finally, in defeating the aggressors. This book is well-titled, as the Yanks were the key that changed the course of the war. I will definately read more of Albert Marrin. Would really like to see his books again in hardcover as these paperbacks aren't made to last. There are reproducible maps which are handy reference. Also included are many photographs which help the reader to personalize the story and picture the individuals in the story.

A nice introduction to the American contribution in WWI.,

I have read one of Marrin's other books, and this is a good introduction to the American committment in WWI. The Yanks were truly the tipping point in this war. Without them, the British, French, and Italians would have lost the war. Their soldiers were brave and their numbers insurmountable. Lundendorff's spring offensives were the last gamble of the Germans, and they lost these through the toughness of the British and French soldiers, but also because of American reserves.Marrin does a good job of detailing the home front, the war in the sky and sea, and the battlefront victories. This is an OK read for those interested in finding out about America's contribution in the First World War.
