The Anesthesiology textbook entitled, "Yao & Artusio's Anesthesiology: Problem-Oriented Patient Management, Seventh Edition," is the quintessential preparatory textbook for anesthesiologists who are readying themselves for the Anesthesiology Oral Board Examination. However, this superb textbook is also quite useful as a reference resource, for practicing anesthesiologists who are seeking detailed information about a specific type of case for which they are preparing. The Editor-in-Chief of this textbook is Fun-Sun F. Yao, MD, and the Associate Editors are Vinod Malhotra, MD and Manuel L. Fontes, MD. Of course, this Seventh Edition is dedicated to the late Joseph F. Artusio, Jr., MD, who was the original co-author of the textbook that bears his name, and who served as a U.S. Army anesthesiologist during World War II, and, subsequently, became the founding Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology, and the Anesthesiologist-in-Chief, of what is known today as the Weill Cornell Medical College and the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Joseph F. Artusio, Jr. passed away on 12-21-2011, in Pelham, New York, at the age of 94.

The textbook "Yao & Artusio's Anesthesiology: Problem-Oriented Patient Management, Seventh Edition" is exceedingly well-written, well-illustrated, and well-organized. It is divided into twelve Sections based on organ systems, such as the Respiratory System, the Cardiovascular System, the Gastrointestinal System, the Nervous System, the Endocrine System, and other essential organ systems. These twelve Sections are then subdivided into a total of sixty-two Chapters, each of which begins with an actual patient case presentation. Each Chapter is then further subdivided into four distinct Parts, Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D.

As a 3rd year anesthesia resident, this is the best overall textbook I have read so far. Very strong on clinical concepts and approach, easy to read. It is lacking in pharmacology, but that is expected based on the approach the book is geared towards and easy enough to pick up I other texts. Highly recommended.

Well written, concise, easy to read and offers many clinical anesthesia implications for anesthesia students. I have a paper copy and a copy on inkling.
