4.0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable photographic record of a Yaqui fiesta., June 24, 1998
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Yaquis: A Celebration (Paperback)
The Yaqui Indians, of Sonora Mexico, had migrated across the border to Arizona, at the turn of this century, to escape genocide. Establishing colonies in places like Tucson, they maintained their earlier traditions, which have continued to flourish.

Rarely have the Yaquis permitted photography of these dances. One such opportunity, in the 60's, led the author to take these photographs. Then he researched these traditions for a number of years, attempting to explain every aspect that is illustrated. In this he was inspired by the work of a contemporary, Murial Thayer Painter, who did so much to record the Yaqui spoken tradions, in her book- With Good Heart. Mr Choate's book supplies images to expand on Miss Painter's text.

While the quality of the photos themselves could be better, the content is rarely seen, and of great interest to anyone who has wanted to learn more about the Yaquis and their fiesta tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Yaquis: A Celebration, April 15, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Yaquis: A Celebration (Paperback)
The Yaquis: A Celebration

This is a great photographic account of Yaqui religious ceremonies and one of the very few times photography was allowed - therefore a priceless glimpse for anyone not priveledged enough to have witnessed these ceremonies personally. Good detailed description of the different individual functions, dancers, music and paraphernalia involved.

This should really be back in print! I was only able to purchase it used.
