5.0 out of 5 stars Yard Butler Roto Digger 30-Inch Long 1.75-Inch Diameter #RD-2
I purchased the Yard Butler Roto Digger 30-Inch Long 1.75-Inch Diameter #RD-2 to use it for something it was not meant to be used for. I'm building a pool house and the location of the front door has changed. I had to crawl under the pool house and dig 2 holes that needed to be 8"X8"24" deep. This needed to be done in a 2 foot tall work area. My plan was to use the...

I think that this is probably a very useful tool under the right conditions. However it is virtually useless in hard and rocky soil. The dirt needs to be loose and root free. Also the end of the shaft that sticks into the drill should be ground with several flat edges rather than perfectly round so that the drill can get a better grip on it.

My plan was to use the Roto Digger. I ended up using something else but the Roto Digger was tough. Held together dig after dig in red clay type soil. I'd recommend this product and plan on using it again when I start planting bulbs.

4.0 out of 5 stars This a great back saver!!, May 15, 2008

This a great back saver. The extra length is perfect. I have planted using short augers and have suffered before. It seems to be sturdy and should last a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased, May 9, 2008

Very satisfied and glad we got it..........would like to see them put a hex top on it so it doesn't slip in the chuck when we hit rocks (our ground is loaded with rocks).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, for the price, August 9, 2008

For the price, this soil auger cannot be beat. I was suprised at how well it worked. One thing you don't want to do is use this auger with a drill which has a lot of torque, as this will bend the shaft at the drill's connection, sending it wobbling all over the place.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but it is Limited, October 17, 2009

Not a bad item for the price, since it does exactly what it advertises. It will dig 1.75" holes, and "can" save you a considerable amount of work. A few things that you will want to consider in deciding if this the right tool for you.

1- It really does require the power of an electric drill. Unless you have sandy soil I doubt that a rechargeable drill will have enough power.

2- Not heat-treated steel - So you have to be careful on how much force you push down onto the head... it will warp!

3- For some unknown reason the the end is round - a hex end would have made it much easier to fit into your chuck.

4- The end is not very aggressive - it does not have the profile of a drill-head, which makes chewing through clay a big challenge.

5- You need to be careful - if the yard-butler hits a soft section of soil it will cause a lot of torque on the drill... meaning that you could easily hurt your wrist. I would suggest a hammer style drill

Despite the issues I stated above it really does work decent. I would not consider it if was 2x the cost, but for the price point it is effective, and you are unlikely to be disappointed.

3 1/2" Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific back-saving tool every gardener should own, August 16, 2008

I bought the Yard Butler 30-inch roto digger to aerate my flower beds. I ended up using it for that and also to plant flowers/bulbs and to install fence posts. It has many uses and is long enough so that you don't have to break your back bending over all day long. It digs great post holes! Sometimes, if you hit a root, it slips in the drill chuck. I think that's more a function of my cheapy drill than the roto digger. I love this product.

If you don't have soft soil, it well spin inside the drill. This causes you to constantly stop and tighten the chuck. I don't have that soft soil like you see on TV. Good luck!

This works great for planting flower bulbs. I driled holes for two days planting about a thousand bulbs and this auger did the job.
