From the Manufacturer

The Benefits of Plugging Your Grass. Plugging is one of the simplest and most economical ways to establish a new lawn, convert a troubled lawn, or repair a damaged lawn. Grass plugs have a complete root system and are easier to establish than sod. Moisture is probably the most important consideration immediately after planting. Adjust watering to climatic conditions. Without rainfall, grass plugs should be watered daily for the first 7 to 10 days. Soil and plug moisture must be maintained. Consult with your gardening expert about the desired amount of water. Root-in will occur in approximately 14-20 days during cool months and 7-14 days during warm months.Don't be afraid to mow a new lawn. After the turf begins to grow, mow at recommended heights. By mowing early and not letting excessive grass accumulate, the texture will be finer, many upright weeds will be killed, the turf will become more dense, and lateral spread will increase.

Easy to use and very well made.

This plugger is not easy to get the plugs out of the sod, even after watering for several hours.

The weld that holds the square cutter to the bottom broke off after about a hundred cuts.

We used this plugger to plug our front lawn with Zenith Zoysia about 3 years ago. It does work (and our lawn looks awesome now) but it is a bear to use. We've got serious red clay in this area so it took some real muscle to punch the plugs and then we frequently had to beat the plugs out with a hammer. Now we're getting ready to plug our back yard and have found a great new plugger. Instead of a square hole, this one is round so that it sinks into the ground easily and then the plugs don't get stuck - in fact they stack up inside the shaft so that you just dump them out after you get about 12 (so it goes a lot faster). Plus, the site we bought our plugger on also sells little compressed disks of organic peat stuff that swell to fill the holes where you're pulling the plugs from - way easier than filling each hole with loose soil and better for the lawn than filling the holes with clay plugs. It's easy to find - just google "lawn plugger" and look for the Pro-plugger. Happy plugging! :) Model 200 Lawn, Yard, Grass, Sod Plugger

As soon as I got this tool I knew that I was going to have to sharpen it for it to cut plugs out of my St. Augustine grass. Perhaps my only small nit is that it doesn't come sharpened already, or else the coating that is on it is too thick and dulls the edges. Anyway, a few minutes with the file and it very quickly cuts through even thick grass to cut out perfect plugs. This is a great tool and will save me much effort with less effective sod transplanting methods.

I live in a neighborhood where most of the lawns are great. June bugs and grubs took mine out of that category. But this tool is great to let me take plugs of good St. Augustine grass and plug them where the turf is weaker. I've done plugs manually before, and this makes the whole process so much simpler.

I have a really thick St. Augustine (Floratam) lawn that was grown entirely from plugs. I've had mixed results with this tool, but more times than not the plug I cut doesn't come out of the ground. The problem seems to be that it doesn't cut a deep enough hole to sever the roots so when I cut (stepping on the bar) and then pull up, the plug often stays put. I try wiggling and cutting more and at various angles but in the end I often have to reach under and yank the plug out by hand. On a few occasions where I took the plug from a less thick part of my yard it worked as expected; however I prefer to take my plugs from the thickest and healthiest part of my yard.

I suspect this would work well on other varieties of grass better than Floratam. The tool is well made and seems sturdy enough to last a long time. I just wish the cutting blades were longer to make deeper cuts in thick grass.

I am pleased overall with this product, but it could be improved and has its limitations. First, it doesn't work at all on dry soil, and just barely on slightly damp soil. We soaked the lawn thoroughly the day before in order to get the plugger into the ground, and even then, you can't just work it in like a shovel. You have to jump on it hard with both feet. I'm a big enough guy, but it wouldn't be for everyone. Also, if you're plugging into new, loose soil, the soil just falls back out, so just use a hand trowel for that. Secondly, the handle needs to have an adjustable length. I'm 6'2", and my knees hit the handles. Finally, the push button on the handle to push the dirt out is too small to get any leverage. You'll wreck your thumbs. I modified a piece of metal to fit over it that runs the length of the handles so I can squeeze with both hands, and that works pretty well. I just have to be careful not to pinch my hands. Be prepared for hard work if you're doing an area of any size. I'm pleased to have the product though. It's a quality tool that looks like it will hold up well, and the price was very reasonable.

OK so this is my second one with this design. It has a flat part on top of rod which is an improvement from the first so that you can hit it with a hammer. However, the rod/ plunger is smaller in diameter and mine already is starting to bend. I will say my soil is clay and if it goes a few days without rain then it does become harder and I am plugging Zosia.
The plugger does do a nice job cutting into the grass but they need to design getting the plug out better. My neighbor and I will make some minor mods to improve the design and I am sure it will work much better
Even though I knew it was not great, I did buy it because of price and I knew how to improve the design with a little welding so overall not too bad

If you are trying to establish a new lawn this is the way to go. I used it to transplaant some grass into my new yard and it worked without a flaw. Easy to use and very well made.

This product is built well but was not match for my clay soil. I had to water the ground just to get this into the dirt but then I couldn't get the clump back out. My trick was to put it in a bucket of water and let it soak and half the time it would come out. The other times I had to dig it out with a big screw driver. It does make a perfect size hole for the grass plugs which is a big plus. It's a very sturdy tool and I think it will hold up well.
