Caveat Tractor,
By
This review is from: Yard & Garden Tractor Service Manual: 1990 & Later : Single & Multi-Cylinder Models (Clymer Pro Series.) (Paperback)
I purchased this manual to get a layout of the undercarriage of a Toro lawn tractor so that I could correctly place the belt guides. Toro was included in the list of manufacturers covered. Although Toro indeed had a section devoted to it in the manual, the layout I was looking for was not included. In fact, no undercarriage diagrams were included. The Toro section basically covered the engine components and not the mower and drive belt components. The Toro section was also rather abbreviated, covering only a few pages. This also applied to many of the other manufacturers; some seemed to be addressed in good detail and some in scanty fashion with entire assemblies not covered at all. I also felt that the illustrations were crammed, inadequate and hard to distinguish. Clymer would have been better off doing detailed and complete sections of fewer items and publishing several volumes, rather than to publish a comprehensive and purportedly inclusive manual covering all makes. Alternatively, they could have excluded power train information and concentrated on providing thorough data on the mowing platforms.
Bottom Line: this is a poor excuse of a service manual.

Your opinion of this book will be based on what you expect to find between the covers. If you want a factory service manual, you are out of luck. Those books are long out of print. Even the dealers don't have them anymore. If you want specs, parts and wiring diagrams, albeit shrunk down to fit the available space and critical repair descriptions, then this is a good place to start. You're not doing a frame off on a Ferrari. It's a big lawnmower. This may be all the manual you need. If you are shopping for an older yard tractor and want to know what makes it tick before you look at it, then this is the book for you. It covers 12 manufacturers, 136 models, 4 types of transmissions and 8 engine manufacturers. You will know what all the levers are supposed to do before you sit in the seat. This manual covers post 90 lawn and yard tractors. Volume 1 covers pre 90 models. Buy that one too and you will cover just about every yard tractor made since they were invented.
