5.0 out of 5 stars An artistic success that grooves well, too!, September 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Yard Movement (Audio CD)
When a friend first loaned me this record, it was like stumbling across a treasure chest. The music is a perfect union of jazz and reaggae, and very easy to get into. Yet, the air-tight band plays with a lot of integrity, highlighted by Monty's Oscar Peterson-style piano and the singular reggae/jazz guitar of Ernest Rangelin. It's fun to try to figure out which snippets of old tunes Alexander and Rangelin discreetly insert into their solos ("Work Song", "Birk's Works", "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho", and a rock-n-roll song whose name I can't remember). Some of the tracks are live, and some aren't, but the energy level is at the same high level throughout.

This record is real tough to find at the record store, I would recommend ordering it from this site. I guarantee, it will put you in a good mood every time you play it.

This album is beautiful, especially if you're a fan of reggae music! Can't go wrong with this album, I'm buying it for people this Xmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reggae Meets Jazz in Eight Vibrant Cuts, September 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Yard Movement (Audio CD)
I first heard about Monty Alexander through a friend, who invited me to one of his concerts in L.A. When I finally got around to purchasing one of his albums (namely this one), I asked myself, "What took me so long?"

Unlike other so-called "soft" jazz albums, this one has real creativity and integrity. No sleepy elevator music here. Instead it features a diverse blend of reggae-flavored jazz. My favorite cuts are "Moonlight City" and the rocking track "Regulator," but all of them are first-rate. Even the short snippet "Momento" is a gem.

Fans of reggae and jazz should definitely check this one out. This is especially true, if your plans include a quiet evening with the lady.
