5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for "At-Your-Fingertips" Information!
As a school counselor and a classroom teacher I found this a wonderful resource for finding quick information on the developmental stages children go through. Each staff member at our school was given a copy and we discussed it at staff meetings. Everyone seemed excited to have such an easy-to-read book that was packed with such valuable information. 3.0 out of 5 stars Useful
As a Middle School teacher I hoped to gain new insight on my student's age group, and "Yardsticks" does offer some comforting advice to teachers and parents. (It's not just me, it's their age!) It's a quick and easy read. I would have wished for more pointers and detail, but it offers an accessible overview.

As a school counselor and a classroom teacher I found this a wonderful resource for finding quick information on the developmental stages children go through. Each staff member at our school was given a copy and we discussed it at staff meetings. Everyone seemed excited to have such an easy-to-read book that was packed with such valuable information. It has helped teachers to understand that often children are just behaving according to their developmental age! I'd recommend it to all educators and parents!

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical and easy to use guide for parents and teachers, May 21, 1999
By A Customer
This book is a good, practical guide to child development. It focuses on children at school, but gives honest social/emotional and cognitinve development guidelines. This would be useful to any parent wondering if their child is on target, as well as teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Age appropriate expectations, August 23, 1999
Organized by ages this book tells what you as a parent or teacher can expect of the child and what is too much to expect. As a Reading Specialist this book has been invaluable in planning for grades 1 through 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best age by age guide for teachers and first time parents, July 8, 2003
By A Customer
This book has been great for me as a first parent. The book picks up where my common sense leaves off. I frequently refer to this book after my own child has displayed a particular behavior. Yardsticks has reassured me many times that my 4 year old son is normal...I have given this book too many friends as well as every teacher at my son's preschool. Because the book is broken down by age per chapter, it is very easy to read and undersatnd without feeling overwhelmed.
A+

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have For All Parents, December 30, 2002

Did you ever wonder if your child were performing at his or her grade level, but had no place to start figuring it out? Did you ever wonder if your child's classroom activities and lessons made sense? If so, take a look at Yardsticks. A good friend of mine who is also a teacher recommended this book to me and it has proven to be an excellent resource. It gives, in very basic terms, the range of abilities for each year (ages 4-14), as well as suggesting classroom activities for teachers. This is an excellent resourse, which, while not exhaustive by any means, should be an excellent first step in working with your child through the years and speaking with teachers. It's a great quick reference, broken down by age, then learning categories with bullet points within each categories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - I recommend to any parent or teacher!, May 23, 2007
This is just one incredible book. It is direct to the point with no flowery words, theories or philosphies. Each chapter is one age. The author creates about a half dozen catagories: physical, communication, etc. and provides bullets under each catagory of what to expect for the age. Each chapter is designed the same. I have found it to be right on the money! This should be a gift for every new parent!

This review is from: Yardsticks: Children in the Classroom Ages 4-14 (Paperback)
As a former child development teacher turned elementary teacher, I have found this book very helpful in understanding older students. This book highlights developmental patterns in every grade level K-8 and highlights what the students need in terms of curriculum. These suggestions can help augment any standards based curriculum to improve engagement and learning in the class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful & Insightful, December 1, 2008

This review is from: Yardsticks: Children in the Classroom Ages 4-14 (Paperback)
This book provides a useful "snapshot" of child development, year by year. The author's love and understanding of children truly shines through as he discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each age.
The book is concise and easy-to-use, and has become one of the most frequently used books in my professional library.
Teachers and administrators, this is a must have! It is especially helpful for teachers working with a new age group; administrators, "floaters" and substitutes who work with many age groups; and any professional looking for clear, concise information to share with families about the developmental needs of their children.
Parents, too, will enjoy this book. While it focuses on the children in the classroom, the content will ring true at home, as well!

How reassuring to read about the "typical" behaviors for each age between 4 and 14.

5.0 out of 5 stars Resource for parents and teachers, March 28, 2008
This review is from: Yardsticks: Children in the Classroom Ages 4-14 (Paperback)
I purchased this because I was interested in where my daughter was supposed to be. I found that in this age of differentiated instruction, this would help with RTI and making plans for the different levels in my class...
