A Beautiful Film That Deserves More Praise Than It Gets!,

This review is from: The Yarn Princess (DVD)
I first saw this movie back in 2003, by complete chance, and immediately fell in love with it. Today, it remains one of my most beloved films. It is a shame that it doesn't appear to get the level of recognition that it deserves, as it is one of the most poignant and heartfelt movies I have ever come across. All of the cast members shine in their respective roles.
Jean Smart delivers a particularly striking performance as Margaret Thomas, a woman with a cognitive disability, who is the mother of six young boys. Margaret shares a loving and content life with her husband, Jake (Robert Pastorelli), who supports the family doing factory work. However, when her husband is diagnosed with a mental illness and becomes too ill to care for Margaret and their children, the family is thrown into peril. When Child Protective Services intervenes and the state deems Margaret unfit to care for her sons given her delayed mental capacity, Margaret is forced to fight to keep her family together. At their darkest hour, the family looks as if they might dissolve, but Margaret's strength, perseverance, and devotion to her children ultimately proves that there is nothing more powerful than the bond between a mother and her children. I am elated to see that The Yarn Princess has finally been released on DVD. It is a beautiful movie that has something to offer everyone, and I would recommend it to anybody who would take the time to watch it.

Great movie. I've seen it on television years ago and wanted to have DVD for my faves library. It's a touching drama that gives the viewer insight into the world of not 'measuring up' to mainstream educated people. It also illustrates what life is like for those who live paycheck to paycheck and what can happen when the wage earner takes ill. It touches on mental illness, lower income livelihood, the repetitive family cycles of hardship, the social services system and how affluence and rigid guidelines influences their determinations. Most treasured though is the genuine love and attention that shines through toward the children and makes one ponder, is financial and educational gain and opportunity or genuine love from a humble heart and meager livelihood, in the best interest of the child? The actors are excellent and portray their respective parts impeccably. Definitely have the tissues handy but no worries, there are tears of sadness and also tears of joy moments.

Jean Smart is fantastic in the role of a borderline developmentally disabled woman. I won't give the story away, but it is a tear-jerker with a happy ending. Watch this with your teenage daughter. It opens up an avenue for discussion on exactly what makes a "good" parent and forming relationships with the developmentally disabled.

I was thrilled to discover this movie had finally been released on DVD. I discovered the DVD release by accident and I ordered it right away. I saw the movie on television sometime ago and loved it. What a heart-warming film and Jean Smart was great in her portrayal of a mentally retarded (slow) mother fighting the welfare agency to keep her children when the agency thinks she isn't capable to raise them due to her condition. Do see it if you get the chance. You won't be sorry!
