I love this book!!,
By Janet Carroll "New Knitter" (Virginia Beach, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yarns to Dye For (Paperback)
I never would've imagined myself as a dyer until I read this book. Taylor's instructions are simple and detailed - you can't go wrong following her lead. For those who don't want to dye but only want to knit, Taylor's patterns are excellent. Not only are the instructions simple and down-to-earth, but the patterns fit, so even a novice knitter can experience success. In addition to these fine qualities, the book is beautifully designed. I highly recommend it!

Lots of fun dying with this book!,

I checked this book out of our local Library, hoping to learn a few things... I liked it so much, I didn't want to take it back to the library, so I had to buy it!
Once you have a little knowledge in dying, you will be able to create your own colorways with just some fairly inexpensive materials, a little time, experimentation and space. My biggest problem was finding a place to wind my 40 foot skeins. If you are a novice dyer, you may want to start with something a little more simple, but it won't take you long to step up to this. There are some patterns included and she also give "recipes" for the colorways shown in the book... INCLUDING the now famous on Yahoo Sock Knitters... The self patterning watermelon yarn!

Really only for dyers, not knitters.,

I got this book out of curiousity and hope that it might help me with my addiction to patterned yarns, which tend towards the expensive. The information on dying was not really geared towards a beginner like me, and the list of equipment, the amount of experimentation and the techniques I'd have to learn made me appreciate why the yarn I buy is so expensive, but I simply couldn't understand a lot of it. I have sent it onwards to a friend of mine who specializes in dyeing fabrics (in hopes she will venture into the world of hand-dyed yarns). In addition, the patterns offered to knit with the yarns provided were not at all inspiring. Definitely look in this book before you buy!

A good start into creating self-patterning yarns,

I eagerly awaited this book because it includes a cute "watermelon with seeds" self-patterning yarn formula. I wasn't disappointed at all. I wish there were more books in this sub-topic of as I'm a sock knitter and I really appreciate using self-patterning yarns because they're fun and interesting to see "unfold" as you knit. I look like a knitting genius when I give my socks as gifts which is big plus (cause I'm not).
I spin my own yarn and wanted to branch into more detailed dyeing techniques, but you can use a dye a commercially-made sock yarn, if you prefer. "Yarns to Dye For" provides the methods, color schemes and examples to start down the road to creating your own self-patterning yarns. I gave it a "4" only because I want MORE and this book is more about the author's examples than branching off to making your own creative yarns.

Even I could understand!,

I have been wanted to dye yarn with a pattern for some time now, and finally found a book that really helped me do so. while my first attempt came out to be striped and not patterned, my second worked well. with each successive try i know i will get better. The patterns in the book are less helpful that the detail of the techniques to use, so you can really create whatever pattern you like if you read the instructions and think a bit outside the given patterns. wonderful book.

Could have been better...,
By Ceallach (SF Bay Area, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yarns to Dye For (Paperback)
I got this book for the 'secret to self-patterning yarns'. Okay, this really could have been done in a much smaller book, foccusing on just the dyeing technique.
the author threw in a bunch of patterns with a recipe method that will allow you to replicate their results somewhat, but I don't want to replicate their results, I want my own. For getting folks started on dyeing, this book will be just as good as any other dyeing book, but would not be my first recommendation. The patterns are also a little disappointing.

Not as expected but still good,

Expected this book to be more comprehensive on the dyeing technique with lots of photos of the process. 1/4 of this book was spent on the educational part of achieving the different yarns and the process. No photos of the process, just a couple scant illustrations. The other 3/4 of the book was dye patterns to dye the exact yarns in the photos. Even though it was not as comprehensive as I had wished, I still learned a few things even though I would consider myself more advanced in dyeing. Would not recommend to a beginner unless the beginner is driven. I can see how it can become overwhelming (although don't give up, it's not!).
