First off, this is an awesome book! I was no Yayoi Kusama aficionado when I found this book, but it was undeniably a great purchase. The book gives a chronological log of her work from the mid-20th century until today, providing a great sense of her personal evolution and style development as an artist. The four essays give great insight into Kusama's life and career. I especially liked Jo Applin's essay which discussed Kusama's elaborate room installations and the relationship between human and environment. The reproductions are of fantastic quality. Of course, Kusama's art is amazing and is the core of this book, but it has so many wonderful documentary images - Kusama at work in her studio, early family photographs, the protests she held during the 60s, including her famous nude happening at MoMA, etc. - that add richness to the entire project. It is almost like a visual biography or scrapbook timeline. I love the book's compact format, which is not always typical of exhibition catalogues; it is really easy to hold and read, and yet contains a vast amount of visual material. The opportunity to own such a beautiful and comprehensive survey of Yayoi Kusama's art for only $35? I'll take it!
