Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A Boston Red Sox hero for 23 years, "Yaz" played in more baseball games than anyone in American League history, becoming the league's only member to accomplish both 400 home runs and 3000 hits. In this warmhearted memoir written with New York Times reporter Eskenazi ( Bill Veeck ), Yastrzemski tells how the foundations of his career were laid by his father, a Long Island farmer--and a good amateur baseball player himself--who decided that his son would play for Boston even though the future Hall of Famer harbored reservations about Fenway Park. Yaz continually stresses his physical limitations and his willingness to work against them; such dedication helped him to establish a strong rapport with working-class fans who filled the bleachers. He is exceedingly modest about his most memorable year, 1967, when he almost single-handedly took the Sox to a pennant, and waxes philosophical over the disappointments suffered by the team over the years. From Library Journal

Yastrzemski brought a record of more than 400 home runs and over 3000 hits to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1989. With Eskenazi ( Bill Veeck, LJ 8/87) he tells of a farm boy who aspired to play for the Yankees but whose father steered him to the Red Sox, for whom he mastered Fenway Park's feared left field wall. He relates his advance from the minors, Bosox triumphs and disappointments, and his own achievements. Yaz speaks frankly but warmly of teammates, managers, owner Tom Yawkey, and his famous friends. Adult and YA baseball shelves in New England and elsewhere will welcome this update to Yaz's 1968 YA autobiography (o.p.)-- Morey Berger, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Manalapan, N.J.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yaz enjoyed a lifetime of honor in baseball, July 2, 2009
By jon (carlisle, PA) - See all my reviews
300 pages scripted to honor Yaz, must read for redsox nation and baseball fans alike. Appears the man had NO faults, would have enjoyed some critique about his dealings with teamates and the fans other than completely positive; however, maybe the man was just a super guy and treated all with respect.
