More About the Author

Andrew Bain prefers adventure to avarice and can usually be found walking when he should be working. His writing and photography feature in magazines and newspapers around the world, and he was awarded the Australian Geographic story of the year for 2003. He was formerly commissioning editor of Lonely Planet's outdoor adventure series of titles.

Andrew is a reformed sportswriter who decided he preferred the open road to the half-forward flank of an Australian Football League match. He has trekked, cycled, kayaked and ambled his way through various parts of five continents. He's unwittingly smuggled goods across the China-Russia border, shared his bed with a crocodile in the Northern Territory, and been deported from Estonia. He lives in Hobart, a city that satisfies his need to be constantly near the mountains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific book for those who need ideas for travel, November 24, 2006
This review is from: A Year of Adventures: Lonely Planet's Guide to Where, What And When to Do It (Paperback)
This is a great book that goes chronologically over multiple destinations and activities all around the world based on the appropriate time of the year for each beginning the first week in January, and it showcases a couple of them with pictures, and a short article on each page. It even tells what "fitness/expertise level" each activity requires (with plenty of activities for those who are handicapped in some way, or are not experts at scuba, surfing, etc. The only down fall is that you are left with an empty feeling about some of the best ideas which are short-changed as little 10 line segments at the bottom of the page, but if they included full articles, and pictures about every activity the book would be twice it's size. I would not recommend this book for those looking for honeymoon destinations because it mainly focuses on interesting and adventuresome places, and not so much on romantic, or serene places.

This book is good for getting travel ideas with one big caveat: a lot of the places/events listed are extreme things (such as the Ironman Triathalon in Hawaii, the [bicycling] Race Across America, bungee jumping sites, the Gobi March, the North Pole Marathon, etc.) that are totally ludicrous for the vast majority of readers. Nice pictures, though, even if the short write-ups are frequently too brief.

5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT FOR INSPIRATION!, January 12, 2011

This review is from: A Year of Adventures: Lonely Planet's Guide to Where, What And When to Do It (Paperback)
I bought this book while on vacation in Leavenworth, WA - we were snowed in, and I found it at a local bookstore for something to paruse in front of the fire at our B&B. I'm an active person (ie competetive sports, adventure racing), with a big passion for travel. While some of the things in this book are for sure extreme, the majority of the adventures illustrated get your brain going, and in turn get you excited. Most of us say we are going to do something amazing at some point in our lives. Lots of us have no idea what that amazing thing might be. If anything - get this book, and let your mind race with the possibilities it presents to you. Your heart will be sure to follow as you flip from page to page in astonishment at all the opportunities there actually are - and with a big grin on your face - start that actual list of things you WILL do.
