Book Description

September 12, 2001 6 - 8 yearsTyndale Kids
This new devotional in The One Year line for families with children ages 5-8 combines beautiful four-color illustrations with skilled writing from best-selling author Gil Beers. Every day's reading features a three-part discussion section: “Remember” (to recall factual information); “Discover” (to learn a lesson that relates to today); and “Apply” (to apply to the child's own situation). This is a format that Gil Beers established in the full-text edition, The Bible for Children. Classic Bible art from that project is reused in this edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to read the bible October 26, 2003
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an excellently written, faithful translation of the Bible that is broken down into 365 readings that are at just the right level for my five year old. I searched long and hard for a way to build Bible reading into our daily routine, and I have found many children's Bibles too watered down to get the point of the story across to my five year old. This one is at the perfect level, but I also think that there is enough in each story that we will be using it for another 4-5 years. My son begs me to read it to him every night before bed.

The questions and lesson at the end of each reading help to get my son involved in the reading for the day. My son is regularly complimented by his pre-school and Sunday school teachers on his Bible knowledge and this Bible is why.

2.0 out of 5 stars After reading all these glowing reviews... June 9, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thought this one year Bible would be an uncontested winner. I was disappointed in two ways. First, I found the writing to be very dry. It did not pull me in, instead it made me want to close the book.

Secondly, as I skimmed the book, I settled on the January 4 entry. This is the story where Cain kills Abel. The author says the following about Cain's unaccepted sacrifice:

"Perhaps Cain did not love and obey God the way he should have."

This jumped out at me. All my young life I wondered why didn't God accept Cain's sacrifice. It really bothered me, it didn't seem fair!!! I tried to find an answer to my question. My searching brought me to a better understanding of who God really is.

If we really read that passage in the Bible, we see that Cain TALKED with God like we talk to a friend (God to Cain, "Why are you angry, why is your face downcast?"). He didn't fall on his face before Him like the Patriarchs. It leads one to understand that this was not something unusual. It was not uncommon for God to speak with Cain & Abel.

God gave them specific instructions about sacrifice, this is how they even knew to offer a sacrifice. Abel knew exactly what to do (fat from the "firstling" lamb). God spoke to Cain with the understanding that Cain knew what was right ("If you do right, will you not be accepted?"). God had told both Cain and Abel exactly what He wanted. He didn't need to tell Cain the requirements at that moment or reiterate. Cain knew.

It wasn't "perhaps" about Cain's attitude. It was about his disobedience. He did not follow God's instructions. "But if you do not what is right, sin is crouching at your door. It desires to have you but you must master it."

All these verses I found in Genesis 4:1-7. This is an exciting story with the answers to my question contained therein. So it really disturbed me that the author creates the question and his own answer for the child. He should have avoided the editorializing and pointed the child back to the source.

This made me wonder where else the author would infuse questions and answers that don't necessarily lead the child back to the Bible but to the musings of men.

Note: I really loved the illustrations and especially the questions that the author poses at the end of each chapter. But not enough to keep this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars He couldn't put it down!!!! January 3, 2007

I got this for my son who is in third grade. He took it with him everywhere we went. He read it in the car, when we were having to wait somewhere, to his grandmother's house, and to bed. He read it in just a few weeks. It was a real hit and he was able accurately tell us about the stories after he read them.
