1.0 out of 5 stars Classic Ripoff of other books
This book is just a ripoff of other books that have been hits. This woman is extremely delusional and wants men to pay her way through life. If your a woman looking for dating insights, look elsewhere.

A Year of Blind Dates is a superbly amusing read, riddled with witty italic comments and hilarious circumstances but also deeply contemplative writing and pensive thought. Through her comical series of dates, Megan connects with the reader and explores the deeper aspects of finding a man who she is truly compatible with. The entertaining narrations of dates make an excellent backdrop for Megan's indefatigable search for "Mr. Right", and the motley assortment of male suitors provide outstanding comic-relief. However, it is the thoughtful ruminations that make this book more than just a collection of humorous date stories. Megan's unwavering morals and sanguine outlook kept me reading right up to the last word, and cheering for her the whole way. I highly recommend this book as a short but delightful read. If you're considering buying it, do it! You won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun., May 27, 2010
This review is from: A Year of Blind Dates: A Single Girl's Search for "The One" (Paperback)
Though I am married and no longer swimming in the dating pool, I found Megan Carson's book compusively readable and great fun. Megan, an avid follower of Jesus Christ, decided to take the brave and risky step of signing up for a matchmaking service for one year. Her book chronicles each dating experience - the good, the bad, and the hilariously random - and describes in detail how she felt before, during, and after each one. She changes the dates' names to protect their identity, and in a great twist, includes one gentleman's perspective on what it was like to blind-date her (featured in the epilogue). If you read the book looking for her to find a fairy-tale ending, you're probably missing the point.

Megan's story is compelling. Underneath all the stress, anticipation, and frustration so often found in looking for a life partner, Megan has a distinct relationship with God, and she routinely refers back to that. When she's happy, she talks to God about it, and when things are crumbling around her, she knows God is there, as well. She explains what this year of dating taught her, and says, "I am the first to admit that I could trust God more." She is unflinchingly honest in this book. She admits when she says something stupid, she laughs at herself, and she even questions her motives. I felt like I was invited into a dear friend's personal journal, and I got a front-row seat to all of her epic dating experiences. (Seriously, some of the men she was paired with were strange ducks!) The best part of all this is that she does not back down from her convictions. She finishes the dating year even closer to the God she loves, and that is ultimately what is most important, whether one is dating or not. In a culture where Carrie Bradshaw is the average woman's female dating role model, I admire Megan's courage in spilling her guts to us, and I think it's a great encouragement to single girls & women out there who are holding out for a God-following man. That's who I will recommend this book to. Megan's not the only one looking. And she is to be commended for making this very relatable desire something that's so fun to talk about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, easy read., August 22, 2010

This review is from: A Year of Blind Dates: A Single Girl's Search for "The One" (Paperback)
Megan's book was fun and easy to read and very reminiscent of my own experience of blind dates (5 years in my case). Thankfully, I found "The One" last year and married him this year.

Don't give up, Megan. Marriage is super fun if you find the right guy. It's totally worth the rollercoaster of dating!!

I really enjoyed Megan's book. Another book I'd recommend on the dating subject is Henry Cloud's How to Get a Date Worth Keeping. It changed my outlook on dating completely and because of his philosophy, I'm married today!!! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars If you liked Bridget Jones's Diary...you'll love this book!, January 4, 2010

Similar to how Bridget Jones's Diary humorously chronicals a year in the life of Bridget Jones, this is a fresh read on a single woman's dating experience over the course of a year. It is a book that will hit home for so many readers who can relate to the excitement and disappointment that come with blind dating. The author is very transparent and vulnerable and at the same time extremely witty in the way she quickly sizes up situations upon first encounter. In the age of [...] and EHarmony, so many scenarios she describes hit home. This book is like receiving a fine box of Belgian Chocolates. You don't want to eat (read) them all at once...you just want to savor them one (chapter) at a time, so that it won't end! This book also makes a great gift for a woman of any age, who is dating or who has ever dated. I know, because I received it as a gift from my roommate for Christmas who thinks I have a pathetic dating life. Ha, ha. Just kidding! She doesn't think that, but I did receive it as a gift from her and love it and now I want all of my friends to read it also!

I was given this book as a gift and enjoyed reading it! Megan presents her dating experiences in a funny, relatable, engaging way. I like how "not compromising her strong faith" is central in Megan's life, and that is evident throughout the book.
I was tempted to skip ahead to see how it ends, but restrained myself, and am glad I did. I like the way that Megan ends the book.
I would definitely recommend this book to others!

This book is so funny. The author is very witty and has a great perspective on all the `disasters' she meets. After every date I found myself rooting for Megan to find her `one', and yet thankful he wasn't the one she had just gone out on a date with! There have got to be some descent, Christian single men around! I hope we get a follow-up book with how God finally answered her prayer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a great read!, December 13, 2009
By
This review is from: A Year of Blind Dates: A Single Girl's Search for "The One" (Paperback)
"A Year of Blind Dates" was a great read! It was funny at times.... sad at times.... and extremely thoughtful. This book shows Megan's strength and optimisim, even when faced with dates that curse, are late, and don't call back. It was really engaging to be able to read about Megan's inner-dialogue. It was also refreshing that this book was so real... all women and men have non-negotiables, but often times they give up because they fear they will be alone. Megan follows her morals and listens to her heart. As I read this book I found myself rooting for her, praying that the next date would work.... but in the end, it's their loss....

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, hard to put down, and relatable!, December 4, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Year of Blind Dates: A Single Girl's Search for "The One" (Paperback)
I'm not finished with the whole book yet, but that's only because I'm forcing myself to put it down and ration my reading of it since I don't want to fly through it and have to bring the fun to an end. I highly recommend Megan's book. She writes in a way that lets you truly know her and commiserate with her through her dating experiences. Just one reason it's hard to put down is because you can't wait to get to the next chapter which is yet another hilarious chapter about yet another crazy/shocking/frustrating/funny/random blind date. This many blind dates could make someone jaded and cynical which would make their writing less than pleasant and enjoyable. But, Megan writes in a way that shows her vulnerable, honest, hopeful, funny and human side that leaves you just rooting for this endearing, brave, fun, confident author.

Buy this for youself, your single girlfriends, your married girlfriends, your sister, your roommate.... It would make a fun and perfect Christmas gift, too.
