5.0 out of 5 stars a practical guide to discussion with your family
The tempo of this devotional is great. It is short enough to keep my teenage son engaged throughout our after-dinner devotions, but not so short that it becomes a pointless reading of words, primarily because of one key feature that I have found in (sadly) few (read: no) other family devotional: The "To Discuss" questions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Family devotional book
It would be fine for my 8 year old but not sure about my 15 year old. I've read with my 8 yo, but I don't have a confidence to use it as an after dinner devotional book for the family. I could just envision my teenager not engaged. I think it's geared toward a family with younger kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars a practical guide to discussion with your family, June 24, 2005
This review is from: The One Year Book of Josh McDowell's Family Devotions: A Daily Devotional for Passing Biblical Values to the Next Generation (Paperback)

I learned recently that my son didn't like our family dinners because they weren't meaningful for him. I didn't understand that until I finally learned that teens don't see questions like "how was school" and "how was your day" to be meaningful questions, even though I thought so since I was interested in his life. No, they want to discuss issues. This devotional sets those discussions up for you by including discussion questions at the end of each day's devotion that are based on the Bible reading for the day and on the story (or case) for that day. Without the discussion, the devotional probably takes no more than 5 minutes, but my family has sat for up to a half hour after dinner discussing the lessons in this devotional. And for those who aren't prayer warriors, the prayer after discussion is very short. Have a longer one if you want, but I don't usually.

All in all, an exceptional devotional for talking to your family!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Application!, March 27, 2006
This review is from: The One Year Book of Josh McDowell's Family Devotions: A Daily Devotional for Passing Biblical Values to the Next Generation (Paperback)
I really like this devotional. The application is good for everyday life of kids in school. I would recommend it for older elementary and middle school. Some of them are a little too old for 1st and 2nd grade children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Family Devotional, March 3, 2006
This review is from: The One Year Book of Josh McDowell's Family Devotions: A Daily Devotional for Passing Biblical Values to the Next Generation (Paperback)
These are light topic devotionals for the family. It is not a devotional if you're geared to more deep issues that your children deal with. But in all, a good devotional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devotional review, December 27, 2008

I like to give my kids "spiritual breakfast" before they run out of the hosue for school. This is something my preteens can read for themselves and look up their verse for the day. That doesn't mean they'll memorize it but it's a small investment. If we have time to read it together we can discuss it for 5 minutes; again, this doesn't take long but sets a good tone for the day. It gets my seal of approval!

This review is from: The One Year Book of Josh McDowell's Family Devotions: A Daily Devotional for Passing Biblical Values to the Next Generation (Paperback)
The questions at the end of each days devotion has helped our family to be open and discuss issues that may not have come up otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased, March 2, 2008
This review is from: The One Year Book of Josh McDowell's Family Devotions: A Daily Devotional for Passing Biblical Values to the Next Generation (Paperback)
I looked around for another devotional book to use with my children. I took a chance on this one and have been very pleased. I like the 'real to life' examples they give with each spiritual lesson.

If you are looking for a book to use to begin devotions with your family, this is a good place to start. Has Bible verses to read every day in conjunction with the little story that provides the day's lesson.

4.0 out of 5 stars Family devotional book, November 17, 2011

This review is from: The One Year Book of Josh McDowell's Family Devotions: A Daily Devotional for Passing Biblical Values to the Next Generation (Paperback)
Josh McDowell's Family Devoions is a great way to start the day together and has given us another avenue to talk with our kids about different situations in life that they may face. What my wife and I like best is that there are back to back stories that focus on the same topic, from different circumstances or angles. In doing that, it allows us to focus on a subject for a couple of days in a row and soak in the lessons instead of just briefly thinking about it and then moving on. We like this devo book!

My family is enjoying these devotionals which are extremely well written covering a range of topics which the author actually lingers on for a few days. That helps to concretise the principles and is very effective. Excellent product. Only concern was the fact that the book cover did not extend all the way to the right to cover the pages. Considered it minor though when I realised what was inside.
