About the Author

Beloved Alberta television weatherman, radio talk show host, news broadcaster, and award-winning playwright, Bill Matheson wrote the manuscript for A Year Down North in 1976 when he worked briefly as weekend weatherman at New York City's WABC. This fictional account draws on Bill's work as a meteorological assistant at Fort Simpson, NT following his release from the Canadian Army after WW II in the 1940's. At the International Convention of Weathercasters, Scientists and Environmentalists in Paris, France in 1995, Bill was awarded the International Excellence award by his peers for being the best on-air weatherman in the world. Bill died in Lethbridge, Alberta in 2006.

Was in the Media, Radio and Television, from 1951 to 1974. Knew Bill when he was at CJOC in Lethbridge, and I was at CFAC in Calgary. In Edmonton, we worked together in a Klondike Revue as entertainers in the late 1970s. Listened with interest to Bill's radio shows on CJCA and CHED. What a "Character" he was, and what a super book he produced. Every page was a delight!

Having watched Weatherman Bill M for years I had no idea he could have a book like this in him. I will tell all of my friends the book is autobiographical. Absolutely hilarious in spots.
