5.0 out of 5 stars God's Great Blessings January 2, 2013
By Dianne
Format:Kindle Edition
Beautifully written. Simple but profound. I found her words comforting and inspiring. These devotionals were a wonderful augment to my daily Bible studies. I was having some health issues with a disease called Lupus at the beginning of the year and it seemed the right words appeared daily in these devotionals while I was healing. I thank God for his blessings through her talented writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful devotional book December 31, 2012
By Lexie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you are looking for a biblical, inspiring devotional for 2013, please consider "God's Great Blessings". I have been a fan of Patricia Raybon for years, and when I heard that she was writing a devotional, I knew I would love it! I bought one for myself last December, and when I received it, immediately ordered one for my grown daughter and niece. The scripture passages for each day are relevant and just the right length for our busy lives. The virtues she examines each week, i.e. gratitude, praise, hope and creativity, bring a new focus and different outlook on each glorious blessing from God. I am a little sad to come to the end of the year's study, so maybe will reread for 2013. Thank you, Patricia!

5.0 out of 5 stars Substantial Content in Right-sized Portions August 23, 2012
Format:Imitation Leather
Patricia's knowledge of scripture and ability to tie it in to real life is extraordinary. She is unafraid to speak with boldness, and yet delivers it from a position of companionship, working out these Biblical truths in her life at the same time she shares them with us. What I love most about this devotional is its portions. It's short enough for even a busy mom of six to squeeze in every day, and yet substantial enough to both stretch and satisfy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The God's Great Blessings Devotional December 9, 2011
Format:Imitation Leather
This is a beautiful and moving book both inside and out. The imitation leather cover, green and simple yet lovely, is my new favorite type of cover and appropriately suggests that this is a book you want to keep close for use each day. A ribbon bookmark helps you keep your daily place, and the one page per day readings are just right for a few quiet moments spent reading and reflecting on Scripture and a story or example of one of the types of blessing in focus that week.

I love how Patricia chose a different form of blessing for each week of the year and then displays how others have demonstrated an aspect of that form and also encourages us in stepping out in new ways to do the same. What a wealth of material this one book contains.

Patricia is one of my favorite writers. (Take a look at her other books. They are eloquent, honest, and deeply moving.) Her new book follows in the same tradition. Her heart comes through in each day's writing and she has a way of helping readers see and understand as they probably have not before.

I began the book during a week looking at Wisdom and have most recently been reading on Service.Patricia tells about how her daddy taught her what wisdom meant when she was in life crisis. "You need to open your Bible. ... So I lifted the big Bbile from its place on my parents' coffee table and I opened it, surprised that the words of my recovery had been underlined years before with my daddy's black-ink fountain pen."

And on Service, she tells an amazing story about a young Kenyan who developed LED solar lights so that many in local rural villages can read and learn at night, giving them opportunities they've never had before. "Why tell Evans's story? To inspire our own. For as we take light to a dark world, people in darkness will see God."

Thank you, Patricia, for blessing us with new eyes to see the ways Jesus' abundant blessing can flow through each of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the "One Year" Series March 11, 2014
Format:Imitation Leather
While Jennifer was in cancer treatment and sleeping last week I went out to run around town a little bit. And when I say run around town, I mean look at office supplies and books. So, after leaving Office Max I headed to BAM to look over what might be on sale.

Last time I was at BAM was a little after Christmas, and I had noticed this devotional on the shelf that looked good, but it was much too expensive. When I returned last week it was still on the shelf, and it was was half-off! So I purchased the book right away, and I have not regretted it.

Currently, I am trying to work through a week a day until I get caught up on where I am supposed to be for the year with this devotional. Both the appearance of the book (a light green color with greenery), and the fact that the author is female could fool you into thinking the devotional is targeted at women, but I have found this to be far from the truth. This is a very well-written, human devotional full of thoughtful insights on Christian living.

A little research will demonstrate that Patricia Raybon is a very accomplished writer, and crafting a devotional such as this could be considered a little below her pay grade. A professor, journalist, and author of several books, Raybon is respected for her writing skill throughout the country. She has partnered with nationally respected ministries in the past, as well as wrote for publications such as The New York Times, Newsweek, and USA Today.

Each week in this devotional has a theme. As the week goes on, Raybon shares six different thoughts about the theme for the week, and then at the end of the week there is a day that is open for the reader to respond and think about what they have learned over the 7 days.

More About the Author

I've been writing almost since I could read. Half a minute past first grade, I started writing stories--but also looking for answers and insights. That led me, past college, into newspaper journalism on the city desk at The Denver Post. In short time, however, I made my way to the paper's features department where I wrote "human-interest" stories about people determined to live life, grow love, find healing, create beauty, triumph over troubles--then make sense of it all.

My feature articles won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, National Press Women, Colorado Press Women, Scripps Howard Newspapers, Colorado Black Journalists Association and one entry in the Pulitzer Prizes for a series on the mentally ill called "The Sick Nobody Wants." Then after newspapers, including several years at the Rocky Mountain News, I landed at the University of Colorado at Boulder where I taught reporting and editing to scores of wonderful graduate and undergraduate journalism students.

Next came essay writing. My personal essays on faith and family have been published in The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, USA Weekend, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Country Living Magazine, Charles Stanley Ministries' In Touch Magazine and aired on National Public Radio.

Then came offers to write books. My first two are memoirs: "My First White Friend," a personal story on racial healing, published by Penguin, won a Christopher Award for "artistic excellence affirming the highest values of the human spirit." My prayer memoir, "I Told the Mountain to Move," on my journey as a Christian woman to learn how to pray (published by Tyndale House), was a 2006 Book of the Year Finalist in Christianity Today Magazine's book awards competition in the Spirituality category.

My newest books are a One Year® devotional, "God's Great Blessings" (Tyndale House), covering 52 daily virtues that God blesses, and "Bound for Glory" (Tyndale House), a tribute to African American spirituals which features the art of renown calligrapher Timothy Botts with my reflections on his art.

Recently I signed a book contract with HarperCollins Christian Publishing and Thomas Nelson Books to write my fifth book--a "vulnerable conversation" with my youngest daughter on her move from Christianity to Islam. The working title is "Undivided: A Muslim Daughter, Her Christian Mother, Their Path to Peace." It's due for release in Spring 2015.

Authors also speak. So I've been blessed to present keynotes and workshops all over the U.S. to phenomenal churches, associations, book clubs and groups. As well, I've given more than 100 radio and TV interviews including segments on The Today Show, National Public Radio, Tavis Smiley Show, Talk of the Nation and more.

"Glorious...Raybon can tell a story to be sure."-- Publishers Weekly
"Packed with powerful moments."--Kirkus Reviews
"Artistic excellence affirming the highest values of the human spirit."--The Christopher Awards
"Powerful. Inspiring. Masterful."-- Good Girl Reviews
"A real gem...(her) writing is fluid and substantial."-- FaithfulReader.Com
"Lush prose...eminently readable."--Christianity Today Magazine
"Wonderfully written." Forbes Book Club
"Raybon is an award-winning writer. This book shows why."--NAPRA Review

Closer to home, I'm a wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and active member of the historic Shorter Community A.M.E. Church in Denver. Married 38 amazing years to my husband Dan, I have two beautiful grown daughters, one awesome son-in-law and five glorious grandchildren. A perfect family? Not always.

Yet in all of this, I seek to live in the spirit of one of my favorite Bible verses: "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6
