Book Description

July 8, 2003
A Year in the Life of Bulimia is basically an account of the past year of my life. In it, you will see brutal honesty, anger, confusion, insight, and naivety. I analyze how the personalities of my mom, dad, and sister, and my relationship with them, have influenced me. The entries about binge-purge episodes seem just as surreal to me as they might to you—a scary fact because it proves how little control I had over my eating and my life. Yet, as the girl in this manuscript, I believed I was in complete control, and that wasting away was the perfect solution to everything. The whole story of the devastation and duration that characterizes many eating disorder cases is not present in this book because I decided to reach back out to life before it was too late. Sadly, eating disorders do typically tend to get worse—much, much worse. But the crazy thoughts that were generated from my starving mind were horrifying, nonetheless. Recovery was not easy, but it was possible with a strong and pure will to move on.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read..., February 26, 2004

This review is from: A Year in the Life of Bulimia (Paperback)
This book was amazing. Though short, it accurately describes what life with an eating disorder is like. I got to the end of the book and started to read it again immediately. I just couldn't get enough. The author's poetry was astounding. I felt like I was right there with her, feeling her pain. This book is a must read!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so much a year as total chaos, May 11, 2008
This review is from: A Year in the Life of Bulimia (Paperback)
Now, I am no mathematical genius, but even I can tell that 3 days in September, 27 days in November, 7 days in December and 1 whole day in January, is still 327 days short of an entire year, as the title boldly states.
This book should be called:
"The Month of November 2002, the Month I went Crazy."

I ordered the book, and when it arrived I was surprised it was no thicker than a slice of cheese. 75 pages to be exact. And rather large print to top it off.
It starts out promising, but then deteriorates into a cascade of drivel and chaos, where I could not even keep up with what was going on, or what she was talking about. In fact, as an eating disordered person myself, much like my own diary. But the difference is, I KNOW my diary is of no interest to other people. Melanie here sadly thought it would be.
The madness is apparent. But not in the least interesting. This book should have stayed where it belongs: In the sock drawer of her bedroom.

What bugged me the most was that on the back-cover of the book she announces recovery, and to me there was NOTHING that as much suggested she recovered or how she did it. For the book ended so abruptly I thought I was missing pages! I felt cheated to say the least.

There are BY FAR better accounts of the hellish life with an eating disorder, stay clear of this confusing pamphlet disguised as a book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish it, November 1, 2007
This review is from: A Year in the Life of Bulimia (Paperback)
I read this book, or well, started to read this book about a year ago. While it's really short, I couldn't finish it. It is does describe life with an eating disorder, but I found myself getting bored, which is atypical.
