It was pretty much an accident that I read this book at all. Now I'm recommending it, enthusiastically. I bought it as a last-minute Christmas stocking-stuffer for a friend who has always liked Hendricks' work. Then I flipped it open, as people will do, and found it very compelling -- nicely written, relevant, insightful, and helpful. So I gave my friend a fancy corkscrew instead, and I kept the book. I suppose it could transform one's life, which would make it the world's greatest bargain; for now, I can say that it has enriched and improved mine -- which is still a heck of a good deal, for the price of a fancy corkscrew.
As the title suggests, there's a little lesson regarding conscious living for each day of the year, followed by an activity one can do to more successfully live that way. Nothing too heavy: most days take up less than a small page. Both authors are very good at illuminating the small ways in which we risk being less than our best selves in our everyday lives, and the alternation of the authorial role between Hendricks and his therapist niece provides a broad range of interesting anecdotal examples - male and female, older and younger.
While I would tip my hat to anyone committed enough to adhere to the book's one-lesson-per-day structure, it also works perfectly well, I think, as a grab-bag of reminders and tactics for getting more out of life. Good stuff, well worth owning.

This book encourages you to look at yourself each day. I used the book in conjunction with the book An Encounter With a Prophet which worked wonders for me.

This book is so full of pertinent information in easy to assimilate sizes. It is all about living consciously and taking responsibility for ourself and our growth. It supports my own co-dependent recovery (without mentioning the word.)
There are mini series of processes for problems that offer clear steps toward resolution. Most helpful to me was the 5 step process of expressing feelings that result from another's behavior. It is clear, respectful communication to all involved and so HEALTHY. A MUST for everyone of all ages!

I use daily readers every day and have for almost 9 years. This is one of the better ones I have used. This book opens up a gentle path for improvement in all areas of my life. Plus, I love the quotes.

This is one of the special books that I have on my nightstand and before I close my eyes for the day I pick it up and get inspired to live the life that brings me the most joy! I have to admit I don't usually read it day by day as indicated in the books daily entries. I usually start out with the present day but then I skip around and see what hits me.... Love it, makes me think outside the box! I really think about what is important in my life and how the little things can distract me sometimes. Like making a list of to do things for the day and make the one you dread the most number one and do it first instead of putting it off. If you do that then the rest of the day is an entire vacation day. A no brainer but one I tend to do a lot! I have given this book as gifts to many friends that I know look for the deeper meaning of life, instead of just getting a paycheck, focusing on material things and looking for greener pastures. It is right in your own back yard you just have to open your eyes. Wonderful!!!!!!

A friend shared A Year of Living Consciously and I've purchased one for myself and a loved one on Amazon.com. The readings set the tone for my day, and feed me spiritually. It gets me thinking outside of myself--and at the same time gives me tools for making myself a better person. It speaks to real values and strips away the shallowness found so often in our consumer-driven culture. It amazes me how often a daily reading will provide a nugget of truth or wisdom I needed for exactly that day. I especially appreciate that he accomplishes that without being "preachy".

I highly recommend this book and thank Gay Hendricks for his wisdom and down-to-earth daily readings.

I can be influenced by the way a book is marketed-- bestseller, endorsed by, easy paths to success. But this book takes CARE of me on just about every page!!--- I've never found a self help book like it ... written with the ability to bring out whats under the surface in a gently challenging and fun fashion. Personal demons are shown a soft illuminating light that coaxes them out, allowing them to finally be heard and leading to considerably less disturbance. Accessible as a water faucet, the work is laid out for me plainly. The only book I have ever found that works as a template for two verrry different people in our family. Grrrreat! I will certainly be checking out his latest book.

I absolutely love Gay Hendricks and all his works. This book made me more mindful of my actions and how I interacted with myself and the world around me. I appreciate all my relationships even more and in the letting go of others in order to heal and expand. This man comes from such a heart centered approach to life. A book for your library for sure!
