There's some fine music on this soundtrack album, but just to be a little clearer about what other reviews below mention: if you're looking for the haunting, electronic instrumental love theme that plays twice in the film to highlight the growing passion between Guy Hamilton and Jill Bryant (Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver), it's not on this CD. The piece you're looking for is called "L'Enfant"; it was written by Vangelis and is included on his "Themes" CD, as well as the "Opera Sauvage" CD others mention. Search amazon for Vangelis Themes, and listen to the sample for "L'Enfant". If that's the track you want from the film, get "Themes" or "Opera Sauvage", instead, because it's not on this soundtrack CD. And as another reviewer clearly identifies, the operatic-sounding track heard in the film is "Beim Schlafengehen" from Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs"; it too is omitted from this soundtrack CD. This CD contains the Indonesian-set pieces Maurice Jarre wrote for the film. Great as far as they go, but too bad they left out these two key tracks, especially since they certainly had room for them.

A previous review helped me immensely with this as I had bought the ALBUM when it came out and was disappointed to find the music missing. IT CAN BE FOUND ON VANGELIS' OPERA SAUVAGE and is called L'enfant. Buy that one, this one is only good for background music for an Asian-themed dinner party.

1.0 out of 5 stars The good stuff is missing, June 11, 1999

Unfortunately, the most memorable music from the movie is not included on the CD. This borders on fraud. What is included is rather boring.

1.0 out of 5 stars This CD does not have the main sound track of the movie, May 30, 1998
This review is from: The Year Of Living Dangerously: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I thought this movie was supberb as was the music. It is even more timely with the events in Indonesia today. Lo and behold, I was amazed that the main song from the film was not included in the CD. Can anyone offer where to find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Love Theme" is by Vangelis, June 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Year Of Living Dangerously: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The love theme which plays as Gibson and Weaver drive away from the embassy party, and again as she walks in the rain, deciding whether to tell him about the incoming arms shipment, is called "L'Enfant," from Vangelis' album "Opera Sauvage." I'm surprised it's not on the CD, it's the most memorable piece in the film. I guess they just didn't want to pay the royalties.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Sleeper, this is an A+ Romantic Thriller, August 1, 2009
This review is from: The Year Of Living Dangerously: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Don't miss this movie! Linda Hunt's Academy Award winning performance, playing a male photographer, is just stunning. It's also fine early dramatic work of Mel Gibson - before his head got very large. Segourney Weaver gives a nuanced, intelligent and passionate performance...and it is lovely to see her in her absolutely beautiful younger years. This is a very compelling and completely entertaining movie about international politics, espionage, poverty and hunger under Sukarno in Indonesia, with an overlay of powerful character portrayals. It is also a great drama of friendship, commitment, personal sacrifice, professional priorities, international journalism, and love. The music by Vangelis is completely haunting, especially L'Enfant from Opera Sauvage. A wonderful film, equally enjoyed by men and women.

This is a beautiful album. I exercise to it almost every day because it opens the mind and the heart. I played L'Enfant on the Opera Sauvage page and didn't hear anything I recognized from the movie, but it's been many years since I saw it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely yet missing one song, October 9, 2001

I found this soundtrack haunting the first time I saw the film and have enjoyed it for years. I always wondered why, though, they left out the opera song, which was so important to the film's mood and theme. I still love this compilation and it is gorgeous stuff. Jarre at his best.

1.0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor!, February 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Year Of Living Dangerously: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The single most appealing piece in "The Year of Living Dangerously" original soundtrack (notice the lower case) would surely be Vangelis's "L'Enfant." This is the beautiful instrumental music that accompanies the love scene where Sigourney Weaver (Jill) walks through the rain to Mel Gibson's (Guy Hamilton's) office where she wordlessly confesses that she is overwhelmed by her feelings for him. If you're buying "The Year of Living Dangerously; Original Motion Picture Soundtrack," you may naturally expect this keystone piece to be included, because it is, indeed, part of the original soundtrack, i.e. the music that accompanies the film. Bad news: It's not there. The rest of the music, while interesting, could best be described as "incidental." The astute consumer may notice that a part of the sleeve announces "Original Music by Maurice Jarre". I was extremely disappointed. This may be a Vangelis problem since the week before, I had purchased what was advertised as the "Bladerunner Soundtrack," and was similarly disappointed to find it was NOT the original soundtrack (nothing on the CD itself claimed to BE the soundtrack), but instead, some pieces that had been featured in the film along with some other pieces, all recorded by Vangelis on a separate occasion, and in my opinion, disappointing. I now believe that Amazon has the obligation to notify the consumer on their website advertisement of this product that these albums are not what they seem, and most certainly to drop the "O.T.S." and the word "Soundtrack" from the "Bladerunner" album.
