Gr 5-7-Peter Wrigley, stuck with the nickname "Worm," is ridiculed at school. He is mourning his father's recent death and dreams of doing something "really great" to prove his worth. He goes on a trip to the Lake District with his best friend and a bully aptly named Pig Baxter. At a youth hostel, the three boys encounter a mysterious stranger and hear tales of birds'-nest poachers in the surrounding mountains. With the help of two girls on holiday from boarding school, Peter is indeed able to become a hero. The best feature of the book is its Britishness. The text has not been Americanized, and will likely appeal to young Anglophiles. The device of children solving problems with little or no adult supervision may also appeal to them. Unfortunately, the characters are little more than stereotypes: the bookish, self-sufficient friend; the overweight bully; and the shy, sensitive outcast.-Rita Hunt Smith, Hershey Public Library, PA

Year of the Worm,
By A Customer
This review is from: Year of the Worm (Lythway Children's Large Print Books) (Hardcover)
I loved this book -- I thought it was charming and well-written. I was completely engaged by the characters, and the descriptive passages are beautifully managed.
