Book Description

NOTE: THIS IS BOOK ONE IN A SERIES. THE SEQUEL PICKS UP FROM THE SAME STORYLINE, AND ADDRESSES ANY QUESTIONS THIS BOOK ENDS WITH. THANK YOU!

An awkward family homecoming at Christmas.

A humiliating public weigh-in, with two judging parents as the audience.

The announcement of a deadline for arranged marriage doom.

And that's just the first two chapters.

In "Year of the Chick," Romi Narindra must find love before her parents find her a husband.

But this is North America, not Calcutta! Who lets their parents choose their husbands?!

Easy to say, less easy to live through, as this book takes you deep inside "awkward Indian living in the West."

To escape her fate, Romi wades through the waters of secret-dating, where self-consciousness is at an all-time high, and experience at an all-time low. It's the sort of thing that would turn almost anyone into a man-crazy freak with romance tunnel-vision, and that's exactly what happens to her. All the while, a lack of inspiration in her corporate job leads Romi to her love of writing, in what quickly becomes a man-quest play-by-play.

From whiskey-breath scum bags to uni-brow creeps and everything in between, Romi and her wingmen come up empty time after time.

And that's when she meets a fellow writer.

On the Internet.

So will it be arranged marriage doom, or an Internet affair that's not as creepy as "To Catch a Predator"?

Time will tell in the "year of the chick," a twelve-month quest to find love.

Tick-tock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roller Coaster Read January 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I felt like I was on a roller coaster reading this book. First I loved Romi and thought she was hilarious. Then I got a little put off by her over neurotic mental barrage for a bit and then I loved her again. The writing was good and I just could not put this book down until I got to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look very forward to the next one. I would definitely recommend this book to others to read because there were numerous times I was actually laughing out loud while reading this. I love Romi she is definitely one of my favorite characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and entertaining! February 19, 2012

I could not put this down. I really liked the book and found that I could relate in some ways. Romi's interaction with her family was great, and I enjoyed her sarcastic sense of humor. Just burned through the prequel too, but left me wanting to read more. Looking forward to the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oddly charming.... December 5, 2011
By B. Lou
Format:Kindle Edition
I read an early version of this book in my writer's workshop and it was and is charmingly funny. Romi, as herself, is not what you expect. On one hand, she's very much like all those pretty contemporary twenty-something girls sipping their five dollar coffees and wondering if the cutie at Starbucks is flirting with her. But on the other hand, she's over the top and
and cutie will probably turn out to be a dog sniffer with a fetish for expensive hair products (that he steals from her).

Something like that would happen to Romi. :)

Besides, if you were a pretty Indian girl living in Canada and you were past college age, you might assume your parents had forgotten all about the fact you weren't married to a nice Indian boy. And if they suddenly told you they were looking for your Mr. Right, you might get angry or you might suck it up do what they wanted. What does Romi do? Set off in a year long adventure to find the 'One' by dating, 'stalking', flirting and losing a pound or two.

Really who know Christmas cookies had that many calories?

Think of it as a Canadian Bridget Jones Diary but with a quirkier sense of humor and an Indian sari.

It's great fun and ... A WONDERFUL stocking stuffer. You can gift the sucker right to your friend's and family's Kindles. You don't even have to wrap it.

And don't worry if you can't even find Canada or India on a map, if you've been to a Starbucks or ever debated if red highlights will make your face look fat, this book will make you giggle like you had three double shot espressos.

Viva la coffee!

2.0 out of 5 stars Ugh!!
It started off ok. However, I will never understand someone getting THAT emotionally attached to someone they never met. I finished the book only because I am not a quitter.

At first I thought this book wouldn't hold my interest (I'm 66), but I totally loved it. Romi Moondi made me laugh out loud. Will read more of her work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stupid
This is the stupidest story I have ever read. It's all over the place, no depth in the characters, constant unhappiness and stress and I just find it to be stupid. Read more

I enjoyed this book. But I think Romi is a little crazy just like, her friends do, over James. But she is being pushed into the forced marriage down the road, so I can see it. Read more

More About the Author

I am Canadian, and here are some strange personal facts:

-I wore denim-top-to-bottom in high school (there is a direct inverse relationship between how much denim I wore and how few tongues were launched down my throat at school dances...or anywhere in high school at all).

-A homeless lady in New York once told me "You're just a bitch on vacation with no money!"

-I always hated those insufferable couples who would cuddle and make out on the subway...until I became half of one. But now I'm back to being none of one so I hate them again.

The thing I love most in the world is writing. When I first started publishing on Amazon it was my "crazy" humour side ("The Book of Awful," and "NOT Love Poems For Real Life"). Since then, everything has focused on my "Year of the Chick" series, because it's the most important thing to me in the world right now. I guess that would tend to happen, when your writing is inspired by real life, including all the satisfaction and risks that come from that.

My "Year of the Chick" series can be described as "edgy rom-com," which helps me account for the blunt conversations and mortifying family moments in the book ;-).

Book 3 in the "Year of the Chick" series will be written and released in 2013; until then I have some adventures to go on!
