A retrospective review of a childhood favorite.,
This review is from: The Yearling (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (School & Library Binding)
An incredibly well-told, coming-of-age story of a young boy and his pet fawn set in the Florida swamps. Sensitive, but with harsh realism in the mix, the story is told through the eyes of Jody, the main character and his famiily. You are transported back into the pre-tourist impacted Florida of the mid-1930s. This is a must-read for anyone who is or ever was a pre-teen struggling with mixed emotions about life. This book won the 1938 Pulitzer and has just been re-issued in a 50th anniversary edition.

The first comment from my husband was - "did someone print this at home" using a copier?
Some pages are printed so close to the edge that the type is cut off. The quality of the paper looks like recycled news print and it is very rough to the touch - like cheap toilet paper and it is very dull - it is not printed on bright paper - It also has several blank pages at the end of the book - and I don't know why. I have no idea how this was billed as a 50th Anniversary edition - with a library binding - which is why I bought it - as I didn't know which edition to buy. Try to find a different a different publisher - it says Simon & Schuster which is a good company but it also says Simon Pulse which I think must stand for substandard printing - You will not enjoy reading this book - I will be sending it back for a refund.
