I always have a problem with the word "Best" in a title. In this case the editor included one of his own short stories (a little bias there). This is an interesting collection of 12 short stories, but 6 are from Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (including the one by the editor). Apparently the search did not look very far. It does include stories by some good writers including Marcia Muller (not her usual McCone character) and Ruth Rendell (also not her best known character). The collection is worth four stars, but I would have rated it higher if it had included material from a broader range of sources, and perhaps a few more stories.
