The First World War is over and Northrop Hall has now been turned into a rehabilitation home for returning soldiers, under the direction of Diana's tireless husband, James. Diana is proud of James, yet she mourns the fact that their marriage has borne no children. So when Sebastian, the love of her teenage years, reappears in her life, she cannot help wishing that fate had organized things differently...

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The sweeping saga of the Arndales of Northrop Hall continues in Bacon's second book about the English family. In this tale, World War I is over, but it has brought death and devastation to most families in the area. The once magnificent Northrop Hall has become a home for invalid soldiers and is run by James Bramley, now married to Diana Arndale. The marriage is not unpleasant, but Diana longs for children and the kind of passionate love she experienced with Sebastian Crawley, her childhood sweetheart. When Sebastian marries Diana's cousin Celia, Diana's hopes die completely--or do they? The story follows Diana, Sebastian, and their families in the years between the two world wars and gives readers a glimpse of the tumult of those years. Readers may find it a bit difficult to follow the relationships between the characters without having read the first installment--Northrup Hall [BKL Ap 15 03]--but the carefully paced writing, strong characters and meticulous period details add up to a romantic saga with great appeal.
