Despite the fact that Cal (THE University of California (Berkeley) has had a less than stupendous record in the game of collegiate football, there have been several books written about the history of Cal football. Why? Because some of the very best moments in college football history have taken place in games played by the men in the Blue and Gold. ''

This book (long out of print) is a "must read" for any fan of Cal football, or anyone interested in some of the special moments in west coast college football history. Even with all the other books (some which are quite good) that have been written about Cal football, this one is (to me) the most comprehensive and stimulating book of them all. This book not only describes the history of each Cal football season (up to the 1949 Rose Bowl game against Northwestern), but also describes the color, the pageantry and traditions that took place surrounding the seasons which are documented. At Cal, football isn't just about the game, it is about the experience. That is why "Old Blues" continue the seasonal pilgrimage to California Memorial Stadium. Few get a chance to go in belief the team is going to win........for the most part it doesn't happen (there are, of course, some occasional seasons where the belief surfaces. But they have been few and far between in recent years). "Old Blues" go for the atmosphere, the social activites, and the traditions which are uniquely Cal.....and incorporated into those experiences, there is a never ending hope that The Bears will be victorious (which when it happens, produces the most wonderful of internal feelings).

S. Dan Brodie's book is one of the best written, most enjoyable, and amazingly documented football books ever written (especially about Cal football!).
