Book Description

October 1, 2005
Packed with striking photographs, this impressive retrospective provides all the details car aficionados want and expect from Car and Driver, and continues the magazine's tradition of putting the reader in the driver's seat. From its beginnings as Sports Car Illustrated, to its evolution in the muscle car era of the '60s, to its emergence as the technical authority on new vehicles, Car and Driver has featured great automotive journalists, including Brock Yates, Don Sherman, and author P.J. O'Rourke. More than a compilation of past articles and photographs, Fifty Years with Car and Driver tells the story of the American automobile, spotlighting people who helped shape some of the world's hottest cars. Appealing to not just to the magazine's fans but also to anyone interested in the history of American cars, this look back combines classic articles, commentary by former staffers, vintage and modern photos of the hottest and most important cars reviewed, as well as stories from behind the scenes—with all the attitude, expertise, and visual excitement fans have come to count on.

More About the Author

Marty Padgett spent the 1970s crashing Matchbox cars into each other, the 1980s figuring out the perfect first car to own, and the 1990s as an automotive journalist following the auto industry. Right now, he's probably driving somewhere.

A 1991 graduate of Duke University, Padgett studied European history and graduated cum laude with honors. A week after graduation, he left for Detroit and a dream first job with America's most respected automotive magazine, Car and Driver. At C/D, Padgett edited the monthly news section, wrote road tests, and appeared in several television pilots based on the magazine's content.

After a brief stint in public relations at Mercedes-Benz, Padgett moved to Atlanta and began a freelance writing career. His articles have appeared in a wide range of men's magazines, including Men's Health, Stuff, Car and Driver, Auto Week and Details, and he has appeared on several national radio and TV programs, including CNN's Talk Back Live and Fox Morning News.

Padgett is the editor of the Web's automotive authority, TheCarConnection.com (www.thecarconnection.com) and contributes regularly to AutoExpress magazine and AutoTrader.com.

Padgett, 36, lives in Atlanta's Lavista Park neighborhood with his partner and four cats, an ever-changing roster of cars in the driveway and easy access to the Florida Panhandle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Major dissapointment for this automotive jouralism fan..., December 21, 2005

This review is from: 50 Years with Car and Driver (Hardcover)
I'm 39 years old, and have been an avid reader of all Car & Driver since I was 12 years old. I really looking forward to this book, and ended up being incredibly dissapointed. Instead of seeing a lot of reprints of interesting articles and road tests, the book is filled with editorial columns from the 'archives', and 'novelty' articles: How many times do readers have to see the old "Baja Barnstorm Roadtrip"? I also didn't want to read (nor do I care) about who was executive editor from 196X-197X...I wanted to see old road tests, vehicle comparisons...and even more of the period (old) car advertisements.

4.0 out of 5 stars The perfect Christmas gift, December 5, 2005

This review is from: 50 Years with Car and Driver (Hardcover)
My husband has been subscribing to Car and Driver for many years now. He is a car "freak" and loves anything related to cars and his favorite magazine. This book is a compendium of the best articles published by Car and Driver in the past fifty years. It also reproduces photos and illustrations of the 50s and 60s that look refreshingly modern. This is the perfect present for any car lover.
