Product Description

2011 two CD set. Seen by millions on TV worldwide, the Wiener Philharmoniker's New Year's Concert from Vienna is the best-known classical event in the world. The New Year's Concert, presented in the glittering Musikverein, features a charming program that offers perennial favorites alongside some intriguing Strauss premieres.

About the Artist

In 2011, two debuts enhanced the history of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert, which has now been taking place for seventy years: Franz Welser-Möst, General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera since September 2010, conducted the traditional New Year's greeting from Vienna for the first time, and music by Franz Liszt, the erstwhile "virtuoso king" who was born on 22 October 1811 in Raiding (now in Burgenland, then in Hungary), was performed at a New Year's Concert for the first time. The first part of the 2011 New Year's Concert is informed by the life and family history of Franz Welser-Möst: three of the six works, Reitermarsch, Donauweibchen and Muthig voran! are composed to themes from the operetta Simplicius (1887) which, thanks to its rather unconvinc¬ing libretto, did not enjoy anything like the same success at its Theater an der Wien premiere as, say, Die Fledermaus or Der Zigeunerbaron, and has since then been performed only rarely. In the "Strauss Year" of 1999, Franz Welser-Möst took the work to Zurich in a Swiss premiere of international note, and these individual numbers provide both a focal point and a thematic framing for the first part of the 2011 New Year's Concert. Two of the remaining three works connect with the family history of the conductor, who celebrated his fiftieth birthday on 16 August 2010: one of his great-grandmothers, Aloisia Wild, née Dommayer (1867-1904), was the granddaughter of Ferdinand Dommayer (1799-1858), who in 1832 converted the inn in Alt-Hietzing (today in Vienna's Thirteenth District) that he had taken over from his father-in-law into a casino with a ballroom. Along with the unprecedented popularity which the venue enjoyed soon came the added renown of musical history: Johann Strauss I and Joseph Lanner had already performed there when the nineteen-year-old Johann Strauss II made his debut in 1844, subsequently establishing himself as the new "waltz king" with numerous concerts. Many of his compositions received their premiere at the "Dommayer", including the Debut-Quadrille, his op.2, and the Amazonen-Polka, two pieces which on 1 January 2011 - together with Muthig voran! - made their first appearance in a New Year's Concert programme. The Dommayer Casino was located in the most illustrious neighbourhood: Schönbrunn, the summer palace of the Hapsburgs, and ranked by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, is situated in Hietzing, and for that reason Die Schönbrunner, one of Joseph Lanner's loveliest waltzes (famously quoted in Igor Stravinsky's ballet Petrushka), is a "logical" ingredient in the first segment of the 2011 New Year's Concert. The brilliant Csárdás from Ritter Pásmán recalls that Johann Strauss's only opera was premiered in the year 1892 at the Vienna Court Opera, and at the same time forms a bridge to a "Homage to Franz Liszt". When the artist who captivated all of Europe conducted two gala concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic on 27 and 28 January 1856 to celebrate the centenary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth, Johann Strauss II dedicated his waltz Abschieds-Rufe to him. In this he was following his father's example: Johann Strauss I had already expressed his admiration for the great musician in 1839 with the ravishing Furioso-Galopp nach Liszt's Motiven (with elements from the latter's Grand Galop chromatique for piano). The offerings of both "waltz kings" are followed by a work from 2011's composer of the year, creating an encounter with one of the most spellbinding of musical phenomenons - Franz Liszt's Mephisto-Walzer no.1. When Johann Strauss travelled to Pavlovsk, near St Petersburg, for the eleventh time in the summer of 1869, he pressed his brother Josef to accompany him and to take turns at conducting the concerts. Josef Strauss was often ailing, and the months of separation from his wife and daughter were intensely difficult for him. Shortly after his arrival in Pavlovsk, he expressed these feelings in a polka-mazur, and when he sent the score to his publisher in Vienna, he wrote on it "Aus der Ferne" ("From far away"). Caroline Strauss understood what Josef meant: he had at the same time sent her a few lines from Pavlovsk: "Always with you, only through you, and eternally for you!" One year later Josef Strauss, perhaps the most gifted member of the Strauss dynasty, died in Vienna just short of his forty-third birthday. In the 2011 New Year's Concert programme, this tender musical declaration of love creates the transition to an excursion "far away", specifically to the Iberian Peninsula: the elegant Spanischer Marsch by Johann Strauss II, and the Cachucha-Galopp by Johann Strauss I, inspired by the legendary dancer Fanny Elssler (1810-84), frame the Gipsy Dance from the ballet Die Perle von Iberien - a scintillating work by Joseph Hellmesberger, who at the age of fourteen was already playing first violin with the Vienna Philharmonic, later rising to become orchestra leader, and finally conducting the orchestra's subscription concerts from 1901 to 1903. Mein Lebenslauf ist Lieb' und Lust, one of Josef Strauss's great concert waltzes, provides the conclusion to the "official" programme of the 2011 New Year's Concert: the optimism and verve so emphatically conveyed by this work are intended as a wish for the New Year, as well as for Franz Welser-Möst's success as General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera. The quick polka Ohne Aufenthalt, which was played on 1 January 2011 as the first encore before the traditional finale of the Blue Danube Waltz and the Radetzky March, "completes" the Strauss dynasty for this New Year's Concert programme; alongside his father Johann and his brothers Johann and Josef, Eduard Strauss too is represented by one of his rousing polkas. Dr Clemens Hellsberg Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

The long "About the Artist" note provided by Amazon informs us of the personal connections between Welser-Most and the rarities programmed on the first half of the 2011 New Year's concert with the Vienna Phil. I am all in favor of hearing obscure Strauss, and the Lanner waltz, "Die Schonbrunner," has a wistful charm. But the conductor takes the refinement almost to the vanishing point, draining natural exuberance and energy from every work here. His commercial recording of waltzes for EMI, done when he was a young, controversial conductor in London, needed defending. It, too, was refined but very idiomatic. Now his restraint is all but insipid, and I am beginning to wonder, as Welser-Most rises to very high positions in the classical music world, if his best years aren't behind him, a sad thing to speculate upon when a conductor is only fifty.

As with the other recent New Year's releases, the recording is impeccable, the audience claps after every number, and well they might, since the Vienna Phil. stands at an unbelievable level of polish. but those are externals and cannot save a conductor who is determined to be this bland. The injection of Liszt in his bicentennial year was a nice touch, and you'd think that the brass-plated Mephisto Waltz couldn't be ruined, but Welser-Most never presses the pedal to the floor. If a pianist offered a reading this innocuous, I doubt that he'd get very far. If you don't mind the constant application of pastel hues, there's no doubt that W-M is a master of Strauss style, so far as having a lilting step and at least a touch of insouciance. I wasn't satisfied in the least. Three stars is the coward's way out, since I loved the program.

The recording is fine but the jewel case it came is not. It was broken in many places, I presume during shipping. It is difficult to properly store a disc in a broken case.
