While I've been gaming for years, I just recently got to go to my first GenCon. I had a great time and wanted to learn about the history of the event, and this book did a good job of that. It's filled with background info and how GenCon developed into what it is today...well, it least up to around 07-08...who knows what will happen next, right?

This book is not helpful if you're planning a trip to the Con as it really doesn't have info on that. If that is what you're looking for, go to the GenCon Forum board instead.

If you are looking for historical accuracy then this book is not for you. The attendance figures are far too high, etc. Check out "Playing at the World" (an amazing book) and he'll point out three or four errors right away (he references this book). But the photos are neat to look at.

If not for the innacuracies I'd give it 4 stars. Still worth buying.

After attending my first Gen-Con last year I picked up this book and really enjoyed the look back at how far it has come. There are plenty of photos and stories about the early days and it gives the reader a good sense of what it was like back then. It is a few years old now but the book is just as interesting; imagine being there in those early days gaming with some of the industries veterans and leaders as the industry struggled to grow. It seems like it was an amazing time.
