Book Description

2007

A moving account of her life with "Lu," from their first days in Vienna to his death in New York in 1973. The reader learns that Mises was a warm and gentle husband, in addition to being a great mind. The author reports interesting anecdotes on various encounters with famous economists and philosophers, both in Europe and the U.S. This is an intimate portrait no Mises admirer can be without.

She writes with disarming honesty about what it was like to be married to one of the century's great geniuses - and be involved in all aspects of his life. Mises himself was reticent to speak of his life, at least the personal aspects of it, so this first-hand account by his wife is indispensible, and an excellent piece of literature in his own right.

Margit was an amazing woman, and this is her thrilling memoire. You owe it to yourself to get to know her and her husband through her work.

4.0 out of 5 stars The last word on von Mises, March 27, 2000
For those who have read some but not all of von Mises' work, do not to miss his widow, Margit's touching biography, 'My life with Ludwig von Mises'. A touching testimonial by a loving wife for her late husband, Margit's recollections illuminate the amazing life of this titan of 20th century 'traditional liberal' economics. From his professional beginnings as a finance minister in pre-Nazi Austria, to his later years in American academia, this volume gives timbre to the voice we find in his books. Among many anecdotes Margit provides, the most memorable for me was the insight that Ludwig never actually considered himself an 'economist' - he was a praxiologist, meaning he studied the practical satisfaction of expressed needs.

No exploration of the ideas of von Mises can be complete without reading this 'last word' by his wife.

4.0 out of 5 stars Austrian Economics Mises, December 31, 2008

Ludwig von Mises initially taught "The Austrian School of Economics" in Austria during the 1930s before having to flee Europe from Adolf Hitler's NAZI movement. Regarding this book, there is the shorter 191-page 1976 edition and a rewritten and much expanded 230-page 1984 edition, hence, I recommend you obtain the latter. As noted on this book's inside dust-jacket: "This book does not deal with monetary theory...It describes Ludwig von Mises the man, husband, teacher...written by his wife of thirty-five years. [The author] tells about their life in Vienna and Geneva before their escape to the United States." This book also details their life in Buenos Aires, Mexico City and New York City, and "also gives us fascinating glimpses of the many major figures whose lives were touched by her husband...[among] them: Otto von Hapsburg, Ayn Rand, Rebecca West, Gottfried Haberler, Henry Hazlitt, Israel Kirzner, Murray Rothbard and Hans Sennholz."
