Book Description

The recession that gripped the economy over the last four years has been the worst since the Great Depression. By no means is it over -- at the rate of job creation seen in January 2012, the economy won't return to pre-recession levels of employment until 2018.

Where are we right now? How did we get here? Where might we be heading next? The Motley Fool's award-winning columnist, Morgan Housel, interviewed some of the world's top economists and analysts, including Yale's Robert Shiller and Wharton's Jeremy Siegel, to find out. This short e-book -- filled with graphics and videos -- explores the state of the economy, the stock market, the housing market, and ends with a critical lesson: The future is always inherently unknowable; tread with caution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and informative March 8, 2012

I have followed Morgan's writing for several years now. As is always the case, he discusses complex subjects in very simple and easy-to-understand terms. This book is a great (and quick) read for someone who wants to gain insight and understanding into the driving forces of today's economic landscape. Morgan covers topics from personal debt, to the housing boom and bust, to the (in)accuracy of experts' forecasts. Each topic is covered in plenty of detail while maintaining the "casual" nature of the book. Interviews with the leaders in various fields of economic and finance research, which can be found throughout the book, add tremendous value and provoke a lot of thought from the reader.

Although the author has done a fabulous job in correlating various historical information interpreted by several noted economists, there could have been a much better understanding as to what caused the several anomalies with regard to sudden rise of home prices post 2000 era, the reason for the deregulation of bank in the 1980s, the formation of the housing policy in the 1990s. Any well informed individual today certainly knows the geopolitical forces responsible for several of the events and consequences taking place currently.

Overall, the book is a very good read and for the price being offered is of good value for anyone who is basically trying to get started off in understanding the causes behind the current economic climate.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time. January 25, 2013

There was really nothing new for me in this book. I am familiar with markets and investing and was not learning anything.
It might be good for a novice.
