Book Description

November 2001
Virginia Price, a privileged New York debutante, pregnant from a rape, travels west to bear her child away from New York society. Henry Mohr, exhausted from combat in the trenches of World War I and haunted by his abusive father, returns home to his family’s Wyoming ranch. They are the most unlikely of lovers. Virginia, at seventeen, is at home in New York’s after-hours speakeasies; Henry, only with a concrete task before him: breaking a horse to saddle, sinking a fence post. Sharing nothing but loneliness and a certain watchfulness of soul, they begin an affair that soon grows into something beyond their control.
At first it seems purely physical, or as if their bodies were instinctively being drawn together to fill in each other’s absences. But when a man from New York arrives to claim Virginia’s hand in marriage and Henry’s father threatens to repeat his past abuses, they must confront their love for each other. With a suspenseful, page-turning plot and set amid the exquisitely rendered landscape of the Rocky Mountain West, Last Year’s River evokes such recent successes as Plainsong and All the Pretty Horses.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A pregnant flapper type falls for a shell-shocked soldier out West. First novelist Jones has a good track record, having done time as the editor of Big Sky Journal.

From Booklist

Virginia Price is a 17-year-old socialite in post-World War I Manhattan. "Starved for places with possibilities," she finds what she seeks in speakeasies, "containers of smoke and laughter and jazz." She also finds trouble in the form of a fellow blue blood who rapes her. Pregnant, Virginia is forced by her mother to have the child in Montana, away from society's prying eyes. Big Sky Country works its magic on the high-spirited teenager, who falls in love with a combat-weary veteran who finds his possibilities in work and solitude, "the hollow crack of chopping wood, the slap of trout feeding off the riverbank." First-novelist Jones is at his best when he's working between the seams of the somewhat tired plot; like fellow Montana first novelist Clare Davis (Winter Range, 2000), he writes powerfully about landscape and its effect on how individuals see the world. As the melodramatic story winds its way along a predictable course, echoing The Horse Whisperer, we look elsewhere for satisfaction--and find it in those same still moments that give solace to the taciturn hero. A flawed but impressive debut. Bill Ott

4.0 out of 5 stars This year's surprise, December 6, 2001

This review is from: Last Year's River (Library Binding)
This really is a wonderful book, but not accurately described, I think, by the editorial reviews and book jacket, which lead you to believe that it is plot-driven. It's more of a character-driven and introspective novel with a richness of detail that is very evocative of the time and location. It was hard for me to believe that a man wrote this, inasmuch as the protagonist is a woman and his characterization resonated so profoundly with me. The careful attention to detail does not weigh down the storyline, though; this must have been very hard to accomplish! One side note (that shows my ignorance about this form of writing): why does the author not use quotation marks when writing dialogue? I found this a little disconcerting, but then it also contributed to the feeling that so much of the converstion mirrored the characters' internal dialogue(...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book, October 11, 2001

Allen Jones does more than just bring the characters of his novel, LAST YEAR'S RIVER, to life on the page; he makes them larger than life, to the point where they haunt your thoughts and days. Simply put, this historical novel is a love story. But, the way Jones tells the story--with allusions to what the world was like at that time--is what is the most amazing feature of this novel. Do yourself a favor: buy this book and put aside two or three days to read it. Better yet, read LAST YEAR'S RIVER slowly, savor it, you won't want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read for times like these, September 27, 2001

This review is from: Last Year's River (Library Binding)
This was a terrific book that took me away from all the horrors that surround us in our country right now. The novel is set during a period when America was strong and without the threat of war, and the storyline is filled with romance, intrigue, historical & geographical accuracy. A young NY socialite named Virginia, pregnant because her boyfriend has raped her, is sent to a ranch in Wyoming with her delicate Aunt, where she is to have the child in secrecy. Once there she falls in love with the son of the ranch owner- a young man back from WWI, with battle fatigue. Virginia has an absolute sexual and emotional revolution that ends up affecting every one around her.
