Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this sentimental sequel to The Gift-Giver, Doris begins her narration only a few weeks after her friend Amir has left the Bronx for his new home in Syracuse. Doris is moody and depressed, missing Amir so much that all she can think about is earning enough money to go visit him. Nothing is working out for her, though, as her friends tease her, her new teacher Mrs. Barker is mean, her parents won't let her keep her job at the beauty parlor, and crazy Yellow Bird keeps pestering her to help him with his reading problem. When Amir writes back, he tells Doris not to come yet and to take care of Bird. Reluctantly, Doris discovers that despite his problem, Bird is smart and a good friend. Bird's difficulties are too big for Doris to handle by herself, and with the help of the new drama club teacher, Bird gets the lead in the play. There are surprises for both Bird and Doris at the end of the story, and a final letter to Amir shows that Doris has learned how to become her own "Amir." The vibrant inner-city setting and Bird's charm make this a pleasant read.

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 Hansen's familiarity with reading problems and young people is evident in her credible characters and lively dialogue that rings true. Doris, a black sixth grader, loses her best friend, Amir, when his foster parents place him in a group home. Missing her friend, Doris is absorbed in writing letters and a poem to Amir and in plotting ways to earn money to pay him a visit. However, Yellow Bird, whose silly antics make him the class clown, insists on claiming her attention, pleading with Doris to help him with his school work. Bird's reading problemdyslexiagoes unrecognized by teachers and administrators, and he is labeled as slow and disruptive. When tryouts for the new drama club reveal Yellow Bird's gift for acting and improvisation, Doris becomes determined to make others recognize Bird's real intelligence and talent. This perceptive sequel to The Gift-Giver (Clarion, 1980) stands successfully on its own. Deborah M. Locke, Westbrook High School, Maine

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Yellow Bird and Me (Paperback)
We liked the book because it was peaceful. The story sounds like real life. This story is great because Doris helps Yellow Bird study. It is beautiful because it teaches you about life, to be nice and never be rude to people, and to share. Yellow Bird is a clown and does funny things. Doris feels proud because she knows that Amir will be happy that she is helping Yellow Bird.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrfic book, July 13, 2006
Yellow bird and me is about a girl name Doris and she has a friend named Amir that moved away from 163 st.Doris wanted to se him but so she got a job at the Bee Hive. Her mother and father don't like the idea because it seems like they don't have any money. So one day she wrote a poem and her teacher caught her writing it and her teacher will even read it out or throw it in the trash. The teacher told Doris to give it to her and the teacher took it and Doris said it was birds so the teacher gave it to him. While they were in class Doris looked at birds pocket and saw that the paper wasn't in bird pocket any more. Then later she saw her paper being passed around the classroom and being read out loud. Later that day when school was dismissed Doris was walking down the hallway and bird saw her and ran to her and she pushed him away because what he done in class. When Saturday came she was walking down to hive bird stop and said T.T. took the note out of the back of his pocket. So she told him about the job and asked could he be the lookout. So the signal was 1= mother, 2=dad, 3=mrs.nicols, 4=all clear. So when she was done doing the little girls hair Bird ran to the window and put up 3 and there was Mrs. Nicole with her flowed hat walking in the hive.

Doris Quickly ran to the back to the sink and put a rag over her face so that Mrs. Nichols wouldn't see her. Then the girl working at the named carols came over to Doris and asked her why she was hiding. And she said she didn't want Mrs. Nicole to she her.By: Kevon Starke
