About Birthstone Jewelry

aqua

March Birthstone: Aquamarine

Like the beautiful waters of the sea that give this stone its name, aquamarine is associated with clarity, tranquility, and peace of mind. Aquamarine’s beautiful light blue color, reminiscent of both ocean and sky, seems highly attuned to nature.

History of Birthstones

Chances are you can name your birthstone, but have you ever wondered how certain stones came to be associated with particular months? Most gem scholars trace the tradition to the Old Testament story of Aaron, whose breastplate was decorated with twelve precious stones, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Over time, these stones were linked with certain powers and tied to particular astrological signs, and later to calendar months.

There are many variations of birthstone lists, including Mystical birthstones, which originate from Tibet and date back over a thousand years, and Ayurvedic birthstones, associated with ancient Indian medicine and beliefs. Birthstones have also been tied to ancient Pagan religions, and even to the collective wisdom of the legendary lost city of Atlantis.

The Modern birthstone list, perhaps the most universally known, was released by the American National Association of Jewelers and officially adopted in 1912. Whether you embrace birthstone lore, or look upon it with a skeptical eye, there is an undeniable appeal to collecting a beautiful gemstone that is reputed to hold special power, meaning, and good fortune just for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pretty and Worth the Money, March 27, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Where else can you find such a pretty piece of authentic jewelry for under $100 these days? Especially white gold, genuine diamond and genuine aquamarine?!
I really love this necklace. It is a little bit smaller than I expected (about the size of a small pea), but it's gorgeous! It sparkles like mad and it's fit for a princess. The necklace is very delicate and lady-like. When I say "delicate" I don't mean that it will fall apart in seconds. I mean it is truly ethereal and just so pretty. The chain is also very delicate in design, which I personally love.
What I especially love is that the stone isn't a bright, tropical blue. It has a very angelic tone to it--like if you took a sparkly diamond and dropped a dab of heavenly blue into it. That's how I personally like aquamarine stones. If you're a fan of bright stones, this might not be the choice for you, but if you prefer a more subdued hue this is probably a good choice for you.
I didn't have any problems with mine and I'm actually considering on purchasing another one if I ever need to give someone a special gift.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad..., December 5, 2011
This review is from: 10k Yellow Gold, March Birthstone, Aquamarine and Diamond Pendant (Jewelry)
The pendant is ok but the gemstone looks more like glass than aquamarine, but the worst part is the chain. It is thin as paper and will probably break very easily. I immediately returned. This is not gift worthy at any price.
