Editorial Reviews

Since its publication in 1900,Frank L. Baum s classic novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, has delighted and entertained generation after generation. This documentary takes a look at the phenomenon that is The Wizard of Oz using clips and interviews with such celebrities as Tommy Tune, Joan Leslie, Mickey Rooney, Beverly D Angelo, Joel Grey, as well as three of the original munchkins from the classic 1939 film and its producer Mervyn LeRoy. This is the complete history of The Wizard of Oz story, highlighting some of the earliest stage and screen adaptations, such as the 1925 silent version and the even earlier The Scarecrow of Oz. From the quintessential 1939 film to the successful stage play Wicked, The Yellow Brick Road and Beyond covers the history of one of the most popular and longest-running entertainment franchises of all time.
Bonus Feature:The original silent film version of The Wizard of Oz from 1925 featuring Oliver Hardy as the Tin Man.

This looks like it was done by several grammar schoolers with a video camera. Many very young Wizard of Oz "experts" giving their opinion. The worse DVD of my colelction!
Buy the Wizard of Oz and that comes with the making of OZ which is excellent.

There's not too much substance here. I know of many Oz experts and I've never heard of any of the "experts"--with the exception of the personalities-- interviewed on this DVD.

I really wasn't going to weigh in on the documentary release "The Yellow Brick Road and Beyond" until I saw the sole reviews were savage and didn't take into account the DVD Bonus. First, let me specify that the documentary itself is only 50 minutes long and, from a technical standpoint, it does lack polish. It looks like a segment of a television newsmagazine as opposed to a feature film. And I would tend to agree that if you are a "Wizard of Oz" freak, it probably doesn't present too much in the way of new material. However, I would contend that it's not a half bad introduction to those that aren't well versed in Oz lore. Made in 2009, I suppose we have the new big budget film prequel to thank for its reemergence. And if that movie ignites a new interest in younger viewers, this is a good way to teach them a little bit more about the Frank Baum classic.

The background material does include an introduction to Baum and early efforts to translate his novel to other mediums. But it also goes through other interpretations, most notably "The Wiz." But, as you might imagine, much of the presentation is devoted to the 1939 film and its impact. There are clips of that film and interviews with its producer Mervyn LeRoy (not to mention some munchkins). And other celebrities participate in interviews as well including Joel Grey, Mickey Rooney, Beverly D'Angelo, Joan Leslie and Tommy Tune. It's interesting, if not always essential. I certainly didn't hate "The Yellow Brick Road and Beyond." It was pleasant enough, if unremarkable in the presentation.

More interesting than the documentary itself, though, is the inclusion of the 1925 silent film version of "The Wizard of Oz.

I was expecting something more based around the 1939 film (having ordered off a smart-tv and not seeing the full synopsis first), and this explains the origins of the story and the different iterations of it. Of course it does spend quite a bit of time on the film and the stories behind it, but for that aspect the special features of the collector's DVD set of the movie are better. It did cover several interesting facts I did not know about the author of the books and other film versions, so it's good info to have for any fan of the 1939 film.

Too much emphasis on pre 1939 movies. Needs more about the making of the classic, more well known one. I didn't care much about the early century versions. I wanted more on the "Dorothy" version.

Most information was not new and presented in a very dull style. Better to go on line and read information posted.
