Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell have delivered a gem in "Old Yellow Moon," especially if you like COUNTRY. When I say country I mean REAL country not the modern sound that has become synonymous with artists like Taylor Swift or Blake Shelton. Although some of that stuff is great it's not really my thing. This is old time, western Kentucky, get on the road, grab your
guitar and sit at the bar country.

I've always loved Emmylou Harris but I am somewhat new to Rodney Crowell. I have to say I prefer this album to Rodney's solo stuff (no offense) and I love what he adds to Emmylou's music, although I love everything she does. Rodney's "twang" and Emmylou's sweet Carolina voice are perfect together.

This album is deceptively varied as well, as we go all the way from "Hanging Up My Heart," a swingin' duet between the two that rocks it a bit, to "Spanish Dancer," which features acoustic guitar and Emmylou's voice, to "Chase The Feeling" which is an old-timey bluesy rocker with some hollerin'. Because of this the album is amazing from start to finish and I didn't get bored once. There isn't a bad track, they all are beautifully recorded and their voices blend together like coffee and cream.
A few other great tracks:

"Bluebird Wine," faster paced, great harmony vocal, swings along with an infectious beat and Rodney really carries the song with his vocal.

"Black Caffeine," Awesome bluesy feel, with sultry vocals from Emmylou, at first I thought this song was a bit "hokey" but it's awesome nonetheless.

"Dreaming my Dreams," Soft and sweet, Rodney and Emmylou switch off the vocals here and then come together in harmony. Great pedal steel and deep bass add layers to the track. Wonderful.

I'm finding, as i get older, I gravitate toward the less formal albums and appreciate those where the vibe is just to hang out and have a good time. This is one of these. You just get the feeling Emmylou and Rodney enjoy each other's company, and it shows on Old Yellow Moon. Interesting selection of songwriters, from Roger Miller (Invitation to the Blues), Patti Scalfia (really? Patti Scalfia?...but it's a very good song), Hank DeVito, Kris Kristofferson, and a bunch of Rodney's songs. Curiously, no songs written by Emmylou....but it's ok, they're covering "Dreaming my Dreams" which sure worked for Jamey Johnson and Alison Krause...sounds great here.

Nothing fancy here, just a very pleasant album

I like Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell's voice together on this duet album "Old Yellow Moon", they complimented eachother very well. You can tell from the first track "Hanging Up My Heart" on the album they still have the chemistry from since when Crowell joined harris's , Hot Band in 1975. He used to be the rhythm guitarist and back up vocalist in Harris band. After he left the band, he still contributed songs on Harris albums. I think the two of them coming together to do an album was pure genius. It was nice to see the Hot Band members, Jmes Burtons, John Ware, and Bill Payne making an appearances on the album, along with other country greats like Vince Gill and Stuart Duncan. Some songs on the album are orginals and some were previously recorded by other people, but Harris & Crowell did every song on the album justice. I love how piano led this lovely mid tempo song "opening Season On My Heart" and another fan favorite will be "Bull Rider", which the fiddle is of the hook. The two songs that spoke to me most were "Old Yellow Moon" and "Black Caffeine, I felt them in my bones. I'm certaining this album will be a huge hit on the billboard charts. The album is a mix of honky tonk, old school country, a little retro rock, and a little bit of vintage country. Crowell wrote four songs on the album which are "Season On My Heart", "Bull Rider", "Here We Are" and "Bluebird Wine".

All 12 songs on the album are worth listening to, and I'm sure you would play them over and over. These two can really sing , their tenor and soprano voices really complimented eachother, and you can tell they had fun working with eachother on this album. So glad to see old country music with talented singers are back in the forfront getting the attention it deserved.

Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell are perfect duet partmers. Each song communicates a different aspect of human emotion. My two favorite songs are "Hanging Up My Heart" and "Open Season On My Heart". The first song is a rather pleasant country song about being heart broken. It features great steel guitar playing. "Open Season On My Heart" is also about feeling heart broken, but the tone is much slower and sad. I can feel the pain in Rodney Crowell's voice on this song. I love the song."Black Caffeine". It is a bluesy country song. I can relate to the lyrics because of my personal addiction to caffeine in all forms. "Bull Rider" is a song about taking life by the horns and hanging on for the ride. I love the fiddle playing on this track. "Spanish Dancer" is not a country song. This song was written by Patti Scialfa. She is known for writing rock and pop songs. The musical arrangements with the accordion and acoustic guitar make this song definitely country though. This song is about falling in love with a male Spanish dancer. Emmy Lou sings about being smitten by this man's charms so well on this song. "Bluebird Wine" is a song that spark my interest simply because I did not know that such a drink existed. This song makes me want to drink some. Maybe I can be happy like Rodney Crowell after drinking some bluebird wine. "Back When We Were Beautiful" and "Old Yellow Moon" are two songs that touch my heart. "Old Yellow Moon" is a superb duet album.
