5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST!, February 14, 2006

Jorma and Jack are solid electric on one of their finest and superbly crafted recording endeavors on Yellow Fever, one of my absolute favorite Hot Tuna albums, from the first moment I heard it. Their guitar and bass communicate to each other beyond what words can describe-only your ears will understand how well they collaborate and weave in and out of each others realm with their skillful tightness. Their music is in a category of their own and totally unique in the history of rock (and roll). Their talent and abilty to take blues and spin it somewhere else has always amazed me. This album demands listening and sounds just a fresh today as it did wihen it was first released years ago.

Jorma anymore is known more for his ragtime blues playing. However if you have ever seen him play electric, you will realize that while he is an excellent ragtime player, he is a very unique and unbelieveable electric player.

Next to Double Dose, unavailable on CD as far as I know, this is as close as it gets to Jorma's very best feedback psychedelic super heavy jamming. The first song alone will knock your socks off and is worth the price of the album!!

4.0 out of 5 stars heaviest hot tuna, July 3, 2002

this is one of my favorite hot tuna albums. if you like the electric sound on americas choice or hoppkorv, this album was released in between and is definitely heavier and more muscular but similar. sunrise dance with the devil is of course one of hot tuna's best known songs. jorma goes for the searing sound, multilayered on almost every track. only weakness is a couple of the songs on side two just dont go anywhere interesting. the instrumental finale surphase tension is worth the price of the disc alone. not sure why this has been out of print in the states.

one of their electric best along with Americas' Choice......best to buy while you can....limited availability....their guitar work is at its best...although Americas' Choice is more structured.....as wild as you can get as far as Hot Tuna is concerned....if seeking older work would mention Burgers....or The Phosphorescent Rat.

This is Jorma's best effort in acid music. It is melodic and shows alot of his style. It is a must in any music collection.

Man, this is one hard album to find on CD. Shame that's it's been out of print in the U.S. since the late 80s. This is premium Hot Tuna at its best. A fine mixture of guitar virtuosity with just enough synth thrown in to make it interesting. A must have in anyone's collection. I have seen Jack and Jorma live twice. Don't pass up a chance to see them live.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want the best in electric Hot Tuna, here it is!, September 3, 2001
By A Customer

Many times in the past a few of my friends were on their way to a "tuna" concert and I always had something to do and couldn't make it; well, I'm not missing them at the Colonial Theater on Friday Nov.30th 2001 in Keene, New Hampshire. I'm partial to the electric sound that Jorma and Jack put through so that is why "Yellow Fever" is an obvious "americas'choice" for anyone who truly knows the band or for those who've maybe never heard them before and can take a chance on the advice of an awesome review!

5.0 out of 5 stars "At least you got to try this time.", June 7, 2007
This review is from: Yellow Fever (Audio CD)
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Hot Tuna's second of three releases during the Metal Years according to Jorma (the others being "America's Choice" and "Hoppkorv") is pulsating in its delivery of pure rock and roll.

Starting the record with two cover songs "Baby What You Want Me To Do" (Jimmy Reed) is the definitive version. Jorma's guitar explodes through the speakers and Jacks thunderous bass and the always underrated drumming of Bob Steeler is right there in line. "Hot Jelly Roll Blues" brings down the tempo a few notches but not the enjoyment. The lyrics seem to come from Jorma's heart and it's four minutes of good time rock music.

"Free Rein" is a tornado destroying anything in the way. The emotion of the players and intensity makes you feel part of the studio.

"Sunrise Dance With The Devil" doesn't let you recover. It pierces the armor with ferocious force.

During "Song For The Fire Maiden" you are sucked in by the pure five alarm warning. Jorma once again playing tasty licks as the frenzy unfolds.

"Bar Room Crystal Ball" softens the assault. Well crafted lyrics and music played in gorgeous style.

"Half/Time Saturation" breaks the sound barrier. It will resonate through anything fortified.

"Surphase Tension" ends the ambush with Jorma's guitar sounding perfect with its unique sound. At a shade under four minutes it would have been superlative to resonate double the time.

When I spoke to drummer Bob Steeler for "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I had inquired why Jorma brought in the services of an outside member John Sherman to play some guitar on the record. Bob told me "If Jorma did some overdubs it would still be Jorma playing and adding layers of his sound." For those that have always thought the San Francisco albums of the 60's and 70's were nothing more than an excuse to go on the road, they obviously don't know Jorma and Jack.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton
