Couldn't Put It Down,
By andrea h (Indiana, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yellow & Green: Not an Autobiography of Marcy Chen (Paperback)
While I share almost nothing in common with the main character from her location to her agoraphobia, I thoroughly enjoyed traveling through Marcy's world. So much so that I was unable to put the book down and read through the night.
The characters are quirky but real. It has been one of my favorite books this year.

Food, Fear, and Family in Seattle,

This review is from: Yellow & Green: Not an Autobiography of Marcy Chen (Paperback)
I learned of this book and Marcy Chen on Twitter so did really know what to expect. But I was pulled in by the story and found Yellow & Green swift paced and funny. Set in Seattle, Chen threads a needle of food, fear and family creating a vivid sense of place and character. It reminded me of the movie Double Happiness which is also about a young ABC (American Born Chinese) woman navigating the world at large, but Yellow & Green sets the stakes higher and throws in a good mix of plot curves and twists to keep your attention to the end.

When I saw Marcy Chen's twitter about her new book, I bought it because she is a fellow twitter author, and that is just polite. I was captivated by it from the first Kindle page. The book is tightly written, filled with emotion, pulls you into her character - and is funny. The book is a great read - now I want the next book - please tell us that you are writing it.

An Enjoyable Read!,

Yellow and Green: Not an Autobiography of Marcy Chen
Marcy Chen's (with Michael Simon) debut novel is the perfect read for a rainy afternoon on the sun porch. She is a quirky and engaging narrator with witty commentary and the occasional off-color observation. Her honesty is refreshing as she writes about tackling the world when you're afraid to leave your own apartment. You will learn a lot about living with agoraphobia from reading this "un-autobiography" of Marcy Chen. "Yellow & Green" is not only about living with agoraphobia, but also being a twenty-something American-born Chinese woman living in a trendy neighborhood in Seattle. It's about the trials and tribulations of an unconventional family, the pitfalls of relationships (both romantic and platonic), and the search for unconditional love. While it only covers a short span of time, the story is riveting. Anyone with a social phobia can relate with the obstacles faced by this young woman with agoraphobia. This charming novel is a great first effort from this young, endearing author. Anyone who has felt as though they did not fit in with "normal" society can relate to this novel. And anyone who has felt tossed around on the turbulent sea of love (and who hasn't?!) can empathize with Chen's quest for the perfect mate. Chen takes you on a journey unlike any other in this delightful tale and you will be happy that you came along for the ride. |
