"“Which color is the queen for you?/ Yellow, orange, red, or blue?/ Purple? Green? Or maybe pink?/ Which is the best? What do you think?”.... Every page is a celebration of the colors mentioned.... As Horacek (Good Night, Sleep Tight) delights in vivid crayon-box hues in her watercolors, she doesn’t ignore skin color—her cast of...children represents a diversity of ethnic backgrounds.... It’s an enthusiastic ode to color, one that’s likely to prompt debates about which color truly is the “best by far.”" (Publishers Weekly, October 2013)
"This rhyming picture book about colors encourages children to choose their favorite. . . . The naïve-style watercolor illustrations depict a diverse group of boys and girls. On two spreads, the color of the text matches the word it spells, helping to reinforce the connection between words and pictures. This cheerful story will teach toddlers and preschoolers about a key concept." (School Library Journal, January 2014)
"If you have a young child you have to have Yellow Is My Colour Star!. . . . I adore this book. It’s one of my all-time favourite picture books for the very young. . . . It’s divine. . . the pictures are wonderfully colourful and original; and it’s quirky in a manner that it SO Horacek no one else can come near it. The text has a gorgeous rhyme to it, lovely repetition, and lilting rhythm. The fact that it also teaches the colours to tiny tots is almost, but not quite, irrelevant. Best of all it’s short! Bliss for busy parents, and a beautiful gift for children, every time it's read." (Mem Fox)

This short picture book has a smooth read aloud flow which provides plenty of opportunity for interaction. The young star of the story declares right away that her favorite color is yellow, and then invites readers to decide which color is their favorite. Our narrator remains true to her favorite color, but offers up plenty of chances for readers to decide for themselves. My favorite section depicts our narrator surrounded by jars of different colored jam and toast, asking "Which color do you love the most? Which color would you eat on toast?" She is of course enjoying yellow jam on toast. This makes me smile.
Yellow Is My Color Star is a wonderful choice for color learning, an excellent choice for toddler story time, and a must have for any toddler's personal collection.
You'll notice that the children featured in the book's illustrations are quite active and that may well encourage toddlers to jump up and dance, run around or just wiggle a bit. Now that's certainly not a bad thing.
This happy picture book's bright palette is also a nice reminder that Spring is just around the corner. And after the winter we have had that's a good thing too!
